Geographical Location

Arolla is a village in French-speaking Switzerland and belongs to the municipality of Evolène in the Hérens District in Valais.

The Borgne d’Arolla is a south-western headstream of the Borgne, rises in the lower Arolla Glacier and joins the Borgne de Ferpècle at Les Haudères.

Arolla lies at the upper end of the Val d’Hérens, around 3.5 kilometres north of the Arolla glacier system around Mont Collon. The surrounding peaks reach heights of 3,600 to 4,000 metres.

History

Arolla has been documented as a settlement since the Middle Ages and was discovered by mountaineers in the 19th century.

Between 1865 and 1935, several accommodation establishments were built in Arolla, including properties with the names Mont Collon, Grand Kurhaus, Pigne, Victoria and Glacier.
