Astano is situated on a south-facing terrace at an altitude of around 630 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Rogoria slope, below Monte Lema and near the border between Switzerland and Italy.

The historical border barrier “la Ramina” was built on the Italian side from the 1890s onwards and is connected with the area’s smuggling history.
