Caviano has been documented under the name Caviliano since 1258 and developed from an affiliation with the parishes of Locarno and Sant’Abbondio; in 1850, it became an independent parish.
Geographical Location
Caviano is located on the Riviera del Gambarogno on the steep eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, on the Swiss-Italian border and at an altitude of 274 metres above sea level.
The former municipality comprised the localities of Caviano, Ranzo, Scaiano, Dirinella and Monti di Caviano; the border station to Italy is located in Dirinella.
Following the merger that took effect on 25 April 2010, Caviano became part of the municipality of Gambarogno.
