Geographical Location

Ghirone is described as a village in the municipality of Blenio in the Blenio district of Ticino; its elevation is given as 1,240 metres above sea level.

Ghirone was formerly an independent municipality and was incorporated into the municipality of Blenio on 22 October 2006.

History

In March 1851, Baselga, then a hamlet of Ghirone, was destroyed by an avalanche; further avalanches hit Cozzera and Buttino in the winter of 1950–1951. The local history therefore offers a specific point of interest for travellers interested in historical natural events.
