Echarlens is located in the Gruyère region, near Bulle and 24 km from Fribourg. The village lies between two cantonal roads that connect Fribourg and Bulle on opposite sides of the Sarine, near their junction at Riaz.

History

The former Everdes Castle stood on the ridge above the Sionge–Lake Gruyère area. In historical times, it guarded the western shore and an important crossing over the Sarine.
