History

The name Gonten is traced back to the form “Gumbton” from the 12th century, which is associated with a pool of water near a peat bog; “Gonte” still means “puddle” in the Appenzell dialect today.

Activities

Gonten has a five-kilometre barefoot trail from Jakobsbad to Gontenbad and a Nordic walking centre.
