Holiday apartment in Vlčkovce – sacred history and protected nature

Vlčkovce combines sacred heritage, local memory and nature with cultural and active pursuits. The village is characterized by historic buildings and long-established traditions, as well as named destinations in the surrounding area and nature- and cycling-related features situated at varying distances.

Culture

The sacred history of Vlčkovce includes the Church of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. It stands on the site of an older church; some statues and paintings from the older church were transferred to the present building and adorn it. On 6 October 1934, the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Trnava, ThDr. Pavol Jantausch. The building thus preserves links to its predecessor while also having a clearly defined place in the history of the village.

Next to this church stands the stone Baroque cross, regarded as the oldest sacred monument in Vlčkovce. It was erected in 1777 in the newly established cemetery. The church and the cross therefore represent two different historical periods and are also among the expressly named sacred landmarks of the village.

The industrial and agricultural past is also part of the local memory. The two sugar factory chimneys are a highly visible symbol of the municipality of Vlčkovce and recall the agricultural past as well as the well-known sugar factory history of Farkašín. Traditional activities in the municipality of Vlčkovce include exhibitions of fruit, vegetables, flowers and handicrafts. Another cultural venue is Vidiecky dom Vlčkovce, which was ceremonially opened in 2017 and made accessible to the public. Sacred, agricultural, craft and industrial associations thus exist side by side, without any single aspect defining the village’s history on its own.

Geographical setting

Several historic buildings are located in the vicinity of Vlčkovce: Šintava Castle, Kaštieľ Nebojsa Manor House, the Posádka Ruins and Renesančný kaštieľ Castle. Each of these destinations is assigned to the area surrounding Vlčkovce. The castle, the two manor houses and the ruins complement the local sacred and cultural-historical heritage with further named destinations in the surrounding area.

Nature

Mount Šanec is located in the vicinity of Vlčkovce. In the wider regional area are Mount Šarkán, Hlboča Waterfall and Mount Klokočina. This spatial gradation distinguishes a destination in the nearby surroundings from landscape destinations in the wider regional area. Vlčkovský háj has been designated a protected natural formation since 1994 and is home to endangered plant and animal species. Thus, the natural features associated with Vlčkovce include both named landscape destinations and an expressly protected natural formation with a documented protection status.

Activities

Vlčkovce has a Tarzania adventure park. For cycling, the Cyrilo-metodská cesta is the named route; it includes 33 km of cycle path and 31 km of unpaved route.
