Špačince combines the northern Trnava Hills with a remarkable density of religious, historical and natural landmarks. The village is home to a church with Gothic origins, a historic Calvary, archaeological traces dating back to the Neolithic period and an annual long-distance hike.

Landscape and nature

Špačince lies in the northern part of the Trnava Hills. Part of the Špačinsko–nižnianske polia protected bird area covers the cadastral territory of Špačince. Among other purposes, the area was designated to safeguard the conditions necessary for the survival and reproduction of the saker falcon. The Krupanský potok also flows through Špačince.

Cultural and religious landmarks

The Roman Catholic Church of Špačince is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was originally Gothic and was built in 1312. Part of the original presbytery has been preserved as the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. When the old church was demolished in spring 1939, the tower, sanctuary and Chapel of Saint Anne were preserved at the request of the heritage authority.

Next to the cemetery stands a Calvary dating from 1797, with a Baroque cross. Fourteen stations were erected there in 1873; pictures were painted in the stations in 1930. Another historical landmark stands on the road to Trnava: the statue of Christ the King dates from 1678 and is protected by the heritage authority.

The soil of Špačince also preserves traces of a distant past. Archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, dating to around 7000 BC, were discovered in the “Peňažité” field area. Špačince received town privileges and the right to hold annual fairs in 1699. A silver coin from the time of the Roman Empire was also found in Špačince.

Hiking and cycling

A long-standing local tradition is the Pochod ŠPCH – Špačinskí pekní chlapci long-distance hike. The local tourist association has organized it since 1985, and the hike has taken place annually since its first edition. Cyclists have also taken part since 1992. They may follow their own route, but must pass through all checkpoints, just like the hikers.

The connection to the higher-level road network is provided by road II/560 Trnava–Dolné Dubové–Dechtice. Folklore and a varied cultural program were scheduled for the Špačinský jarmok at the local amphitheater on Saturday, August 16.
