Bžany on Veľká Domaša: Water, Trails and Churches
Bžany lies on the western shore of the Veľká Domaša reservoir on the Ondava River. The Veľká Domaša reservoir is located in the Ondavská vrchovina mountain range, in the mountainous surroundings of the Lower Beskids. The waterscape and mountainous surroundings can be considered as two separate focal points when planning your stay.
Landscape
The Valkov recreational area is located on the western shore of the reservoir and is the centre of the Stropkov part of the Domaša area. The Valkov recreation centre is divided into the northern Valkov area and the southern Tíšava area.
Activities
The Valkov recreation centre offers good conditions for bathing, swimming, diving, boating and windsurfing. Valkov public beach is characterised by grass and gravel and has a gently sloping access to the water. Marked hiking trails in the Valkov area connect to the red-marked Cesta slobody trail, which is part of the Slovak and European network of hiking trails. Different types of activity – water-based activities and hiking – can be given separate weight when planning your day.
Tíšava beach consists of sand and grass, has a very gently sloping access to the water and is considered particularly suitable for families with small children. The Tíšava recreation area includes children's playgrounds, a beach volleyball court, showers, a snack bar and a rental service for small watercraft. Tíšava Autocamp offers more than 60 pitches for tents and 20 pitches for caravans, each with water and electricity connections.
When comparing the waterside areas, you can note the beach material and slope separately; the services mentioned can be organised by activity, break and time spent outdoors.
Culture and Nature
In the Church of Chrám sv. Mikuláša biskupa, the altar with the projecting iconostasis dates from the period when the church was built. Also located there is a Madonna painting in tempera on wood with a Rococo frame, dating from the second half of the 18th century. The late Baroque single-nave Church of Chrám ochrany Presvätej Bohorodičky in Valkov was built in 1817. Its attic is home to a colony of Geoffroy's bats (M. emarginatus) with more than 2,000 females. The Neoclassical church in Bžany was probably built in 1825 and restored in 1886.
At the churches, you can consider construction dates, works of art and natural details as different perspectives. For your personal planning, water activities, hiking trails, beaches and churches can be arranged according to your preferred daily rhythm.
When comparing holiday apartments in Bžany, check the travel dates, apartment category and cancellation conditions on the listing pages. Valkov and Tíšava represent different focal points within the Domaša area. Anyone wishing to combine water, marked trails and churches in one stay can consider these topics separately and organise their daily rhythm accordingly; the specific weighting remains open and depends on personal interests. The three details help you structure your own planning clearly, without automatically giving equal weight to water, hiking trails and culture.
