In Snina, a Neoclassical manor house, the traces of a historic forest railway and the ponds of Mlynisko offer insights into different aspects of the town. In addition, cycling and hiking routes connect history, forest landscapes and the Sninské rybníky.

Culture and history

The Neoclassical manor house in Snina was built in 1781 on the site of an earlier wooden building. Today, it houses museum exhibits and gallery exhibitions, including the “Ozveny Sniny” exhibition. The restored manor house was ceremonially opened to the public on 5 July 2013 as part of the celebrations marking the 1,150th anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius.

The “Sninská úzkokoľajová lesná dráha (S.U.L.D.)” is also associated with a technical remnant of regional timber extraction. The forest railway was used to transport wood from the Vihorlat Mountains to a local sawmill in Snina; its tracks had a gauge of 760 mm. Several culverts and bridges from the original route have survived to this day. The remains of the “Sninská úzkokoľajová lesná dráha” form station 8 of the town’s “Za históriou Sniny” cycling route.

Cycling

The 10-kilometre-long “Za históriou Sniny” town cycling route leads through the history of Snina via nine stations. Along the way, it provides information about the town’s historical, cultural and natural monuments. The route is considered easy and is also suitable for active recreation with children.

Another connection between the town and the countryside is provided by the cycling excursion “Snina – Sninské rybníky – Biele kamene”. It starts in Snina and leads to the popular Sninské rybníky recreational area. From the Sninské rybníky, the excursion continues along forest paths towards Biele kamene.

Nature and water

The Mlynisko ponds, surrounded by greenery, provide refuge for various species of waterfowl and other fauna. The Mlynisko pond is also used for sport fishing. The Sninské rybníky offer an environment for walks and picnics combined with mushroom picking.

The forests around the Sninské rybníky consist predominantly of mixed woodland. From spring to late autumn, they provide favourable conditions for mushroom growth. Mushroom picking at the Sninské rybníky offers the opportunity to collect fresh mushrooms for culinary preparation.

Hiking and information

One of the hiking options is the moderately difficult “Snina – Sninský kameň” route. It is 8.9 km long.
