Zlatibor: Hiking Trails, Gondola and Nature Experiences
Zlatibor combines marked hiking trails, protected nature and a variety of excursion destinations with special experiences for active days and shared discoveries. Anyone looking for accommodation should therefore first consider whether the focus is on trails starting from the centre, nature experiences, culture or a wide range of activities.
Hiking Trails Starting at Kraljev trg
For hiking enthusiasts, Zlatibor offers developed trails with varying levels of difficulty and physical exertion. Beginners, recreational athletes, active sportspeople and mountain hikers can therefore find different ways to explore the surroundings on foot. Three marked routes begin at Kraljev trg: The “Centar – Spomenik na Šumatnom brdu” trail is 2.3 km long and runs in one direction. “Centar – Čuker (Čigota)” also runs in one direction over 5 km. The “Centar – Vidikovac Gradina” trail leads from Kraljev trg to Gradina and is 5.3 km long in one direction.
These clearly named starting points help with planning a holiday apartment if you like to begin your days with a hike from the centre. The trail lengths can be compared directly without having to derive a specific walking time from them.
Gold Gondola, Tornik and Nature
The Gold Gondola connects the centre of Zlatibor with the Tornik ski centre. A one-way ride takes 25 minutes. The gondola has an intermediate station at Ribničko jezero. This makes it possible to plan the gondola ride as a separate excursion; anyone who also wants to include the Tornik ski centre can take this destination into account when choosing accommodation and planning their days.
One of the prominent natural attractions is Stopića pećina. The cave is officially protected as a natural monument and protected natural asset of exceptional importance. It was prepared for tourist visits and opened to visitors in 2009; at the same time, a footpath from the car park to the cave entrance was created. Zlatibor was declared a nature park in 2017 and is also promoted as a health resort.
Active Experiences and Excursions
The 6-hectare Dino Park is located in the heart of Zlatibor. It features 20 interactive dinosaur replicas from the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods, as well as 20 exhibits from the world of modern technology. Also in the heart of Zlatibor, Avantura Park extends across 4 hectares of pine forest. Visitors can test their skills, imagination and agility there on 7 levels. These two destinations offer different focuses for a shared excursion.
Further activities complement the range of attractions: The go-kart track is located near the town centre, 300 metres above the market, in a natural setting with pine forest. A paintball field is located 1 km from the centre, next to the main road and near the hiking trail to the monument on Šumatno brdo. Canyoning tours are also offered in Zlatibor, including exploration of the Ribnica Canyon. Quad routes lead, among other places, towards Tornik, and paragliding is available as an adrenaline-filled experience with views of Zlatibor’s landscapes.
Culture, Regional Cuisine and Special Dates
The Staro Selo open-air museum in Sirogojno is located 26 km from Zlatibor’s tourist centre and is the only open-air museum in Serbia. The exhibition presents log houses from the Zlatibor region as evidence of residential culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. For a stay focused on culture, this distance should be included in your day planning. In the village of Sirogojno, cheese, kajmak and other dishes typical of the area are also offered in a traditional setting.
A recurring cultural event is the International Sports Film Festival. It takes place every year on the penultimate weekend of August at the Zlatibor Cultural Centre. Those choosing this period for their trip can include the festival as a fixed part of their plans without excluding other nature- and activity-filled days. The “Zova” ranch is also one of the special excursion destinations: It has 10 adult horses and 5 ponies.
Choose the Right Base
A holiday apartment in the centre area may be of interest to travellers who want to use Kraljev trg as the starting point for several marked trails and include destinations such as Dino Park, Avantura Park or the go-kart track in their plans. Those who are mainly considering nature, the open-air museum in Sirogojno or excursions towards Tornik should include the relevant distances and destinations in their daily planning before booking. This way, the choice of accommodation is guided by the desired pace of travel rather than just by a single excursion destination.
Other destinations that you can explore via the page include Kremna, Rakovica, Šljivovica, Kaludjerske Bare, Sainovina, Užice, Nikojevići and Brdo.
