Between Mountains and Plateau

Novi Pazar lies in a valley surrounded by the peaks of the Golija and Rogozna mountains and by the Pešter Plateau. The history of this site therefore extends far beyond its medieval architectural history.

Mosques, Hammam and Fortress

The city’s religious and urban architectural history can also be traced through several notable buildings. The Altun-Alem Mosque dates from the 16th century and was built by the architect Muslihudin Abdulgani. The Arap Mosque was first mentioned in a register from 1528. Its circular-section minaret provides a visual accent on the Old Bazaar Street.

The Isa-Beg Hammam was commissioned by Isa-beg Ishaković in the second half of the 15th century and was first mentioned in written records in 1489. As a double hammam, it is divided into a men’s and a women’s section. The Novi Pazar Fortress offers another perspective on the city’s history: its three corner bastions form an approximately equilateral triangle. Of the fortress’s former buildings, Kula Motrilja is the only surviving structure.

The Amir-Agin Han also stands in the centre of Novi Pazar and probably dates from the 17th century. Another cultural point of reference is the “Stari Grad” music festival, which is part of the history of the place. It was first held in 2004 and was attended by pop and rock musicians from the Balkans.
