Discover Čačak: Culture, History and Nature

Čačak combines urban history, art and diverse experiences in nature. The city lies between the Jelica Mountains to the south, Ovčar and Kablar to the west, and Vujan to the north. This means that a trip can encompass everything from museums and historic buildings to marked hiking trails, viewpoints and summer activities on the West Morava.

Art and History in Čačak

A good starting point for exploring the city’s cultural history is Master Jovan’s Konak. The building was constructed in 1835 and houses the permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Čačak. The exhibition covers three main themes: the Čačak region from prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages; the monasteries and churches of Ovčar-Kablar and the Čačak region; and the Čačak region during the uprisings and wars from 1804 to 1941.

The art collections also offer different perspectives. The gallery presents five collections, including “Nadežda and contemporaries”, Yugoslav painting from the second half of the 20th century, contemporary art, the memorial collection of Bogić Risimović Risim, and drawings and caricatures by Pjer Križanić. The collection of 20th-century paintings contains more than 500 works. Twice a year, the Risim Gallery presents a memorial exhibition featuring 23 paintings by Risim from the years 1952 to 1983. One ticket provides access to both exhibition areas: the “Nadežda Petrović” Gallery at 6 Cara Dušana Street and the Risim Gallery at 11 Gospodar Jovanova Street.

The Intermunicipal Historical Archive is housed in the former building of the District Administration of Čačak, constructed between 1875 and 1877. The building has been classified as a cultural asset of great importance. The archive holdings are publicly accessible in the reading room, subject to the stated restrictions. The entrance area contains the Photography Salon, which organises solo and group photography exhibitions. The Cultural Centre in the centre of Čačak is another hub for cultural events and is located in a building with an area of approximately 4,000 m².

Historic Sites and Distinctive Landscapes

Historic attractions include the Roman Baths in the centre of Čačak. They date from Late Antiquity and have been declared a cultural monument. The Ossuary Monument of the Four Religions was built and consecrated in 1934. It preserves the remains of 918 soldiers, including 652 Serbian fighters. On Ljubić Hill, a memorial commemorates the fighters and events of the Serbian liberation wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. The oldest monument in the complex is dedicated to the Battle of Ljubić in 1815 and the deed of Tanasko Rajić; it was partially constructed in 1938.

The nearby protected landscape of exceptional importance, Ovčarsko-Kablarska Klisura, is partly located within the territory of the city of Čačak. Nineteen species of wild-growing orchids are known in the gorge. Marked hiking trails lead to monasteries and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding nature, the wooded mountain ranges and the West Morava. Those wishing to combine culture and physical activity can plan this landscape as a separate focus alongside a visit to the city.

Events and Summer Experiences

Čačak’s city beach on the West Morava is used for recreation and is also a venue for entertainment and sporting events. In summer, the sports centre organises activities at the city beach and swimming pools. “Dis' Spring” is also of interest when planning a trip: the poetry event has taken place without interruption since 1964 and is held annually in Čačak and the surrounding area from 10 March, Dis’s birthday, until the end of May. It also promotes the creativity of young authors. DUK is an international youth festival that combines extreme sports, mural painting, hip-hop culture and music.
