Kopaonik: Nature, Culture and Winter Sports
Kopaonik combines the winter side of an extensive ski area with protected landscapes, exceptional hiking destinations and a surprisingly rich cultural history. Anyone planning a trip to Kopaonik can choose between active days on the mountain, guided hikes during the summer season and excursions to archaeological and religious sites.
Winter Sports on the Ravni Kopaonik Plateau
The Ravni Kopaonik Plateau is home to a large tourist complex with numerous accommodation options and an extensive network of ski slopes and lifts. The snowmaking system in the Kopaonik ski area covers 97% of the ski area. For travellers planning their stay around winter sports, this area therefore provides clear guidance when choosing accommodation. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Kopaonik can first decide whether the focus of the trip should be on slopes and lifts or on the natural and cultural attractions of the national park.
Hiking Trails through Mountain and Moorland Landscapes
During the summer season, Kopaonik National Park organises guided hikes to attractive destinations on the mountain. One of the notable trails is the Nebeske Stolice route. It leads to a ridge at 1,913 metres above sea level, south of the summit of Pančićev vrh. A well-frequented hiking trail also connects the centre of Kopaonik with Nebeske Stolice.
Jankove Bare offers a different landscape: it is a nature reserve and the largest peat bog on Kopaonik. There, the national park has built a raised wooden boardwalk over streams and moorland areas to facilitate movement and improve accessibility. A hiking trail runs through the Samokovska Reka Gorge, crossing the two nature reserves of Samokovska Reka and Kozja Stena. For the most part, the trail follows the canyon of the Samokovka, a clear, fast-flowing river with cascades and streams.
Cultural Sites between Hiking Destinations
Metođe is a popular pilgrimage site associated with Saint Methodius. A marked trail leads from the road at the entrance to the nature reserve to the sanctuary; one of the access routes follows the asphalt road towards Brus. The Church of Saint Procopius, dating from the 5th to 6th century, stands near Nebeske Stolice.
Crkvine also combines natural experiences with history. The archaeological site preserves the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 5th century. Every year, residents of the surrounding villages gather on the platform at Crkvine to pray and celebrate Saint Procopius. For visitors interested in religious traditions and early architectural history, these sites add a cultural dimension alongside the hiking trails.
Discovering Protected Nature Consciously
Kopaonik National Park comprises thirteen nature reserves, all of which are subject to the highest level of protection. Botanical highlights include 91 endemic and 82 subendemic plant species; 30 of them are under absolute protection. White Rocks, also known as Bele Stene, covers 76.21 hectares and includes the summit of Žljeb, Bela Stena. The Jelovarnik landscape includes a cascade waterfall of the same name with a height of 71 metres. Anyone wishing to explore the national park in an off-road vehicle may use only the designated ATV trail; driving outside this marked route is strictly prohibited.
Choosing the Right Base
Kopaonik National Park can be reached via an access road from Raška. When looking for accommodation in Kopaonik, it is worth deciding in advance what daily rhythm you want: in winter, the plateau, ski slopes and lifts are the focus, while in summer, guided hikes, moorlands, gorges and cultural sites allow for a variety of excursion plans. This means that the choice of a holiday apartment or holiday home is not determined by a blanket recommendation, but by the experiences you actually want to combine during your stay.
