Vinča: Archaeology, Nature and Trails

Vinča combines exceptional archaeology with landscapes where water, wetlands and hiking trails can be explored. Belo Brdo: Archaeology at the Site Where It Was Found

The Belo Brdo archaeological site has a 10.5-meter-thick cultural layer extending across 10 hectares. Excavations began in 1908 under the direction of university professor Miloje Vasić. The finds include numerous stylized anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines from the Vinča culture. These details give the visit a concrete historical dimension: You are not merely seeing a name from prehistory, but a site with a large spatial extent and a long history of research.

A museum exhibition is located directly at the site. A visit to Vinča Belo Brdo also includes an outdoor exhibition. The history of metallurgy is also noteworthy: Vinča was the site of the earliest known copper production in the world using extractive metallurgy. This creates a varied cultural day for families and other travel groups, combining archaeological finds, exhibitions and the history of an important site.

Planning Your Visit to Belo Brdo

Vinča Belo Brdo is open to visitors from April 1 to October 31. Outside this period, visits must be booked in advance. On weekends, guided tours are offered at set times: 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 14:30, 16:00 and 17:30. These times make it easier to fit a cultural visit into your daily schedule without losing sight of Vinča’s other experiences.

Water Landscapes and Nature in Vinča

The Mali Dunav in Vinča is a model river more than 1,000 meters long. Its lower section, prepared for visitors, covers approximately 5.5 hectares. Those who want to explore a different, more scenic side of the area after focusing on archaeology will find a separate destination here, with clear dimensions and a special connection to water.

The Vinčanska bara wetland ecosystem is also located in the settlement of Vinča, in the municipality of Grocka, in the immediate vicinity of Velikoselski rit and the Danube. It provides a habitat for numerous species of birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects and plants. Protected and rare species recorded there include the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) and the little egret (Egretta garzetta). For your travel planning, this offers an interesting complement to the archaeology: Here, the focus is on wetlands and biodiversity rather than exhibitions and finds.

Hiking Trail and Guided Excursion Route

The Ritopek–Vinča hiking trail is 8.6 kilometers long and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Take this distance into account when planning your day. Along the trail, the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is named as a place worth visiting. This makes it possible to explore Vinča along a longer route and with an additional cultural destination.

The “Grocka on the Danube” excursion route includes the archaeological site in Vinča. On this route, visitors are given an expert tour by Dragan Janković, curator of the Belgrade City Museum and an archaeologist. They learn about the emergence of the first European civilization, centered in Vinča, as well as the protected site of particular importance to the Republic of Serbia.
