Mala Ivanča between Avala and Trešnja
Accommodation in Mala Ivanča
Mala Ivanča lies on the southern slopes of Avala and combines a distinctive landscape with traces of local history. Nearby Lake Trešnja adds forest and water to the picture; a path through the area leads to a panorama overlooking Avala. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay: nature, history, or local events.
If you are planning a trip with children or with people who have different interests, having a clear idea for each day can make it easier to choose. First consider whether the landscape and lake, a look at local history, or an event date should shape your holiday. This helps you choose a holiday apartment based on the experiences that matter to you, without combining every place into a single excursion itinerary.
Forest Lake and the Avala Landscape
Mala Ivanča and Lake Trešnja lie on the southern slopes of Avala. The nearby lake is artificial: it was created by building a dam across a forest stream. Trešnja is about 150 metres long and up to 30 metres wide; a mixed deciduous and coniferous forest of the same name lies beside the lake. Water and forest give the nature experience two distinct sides.
Different interests come together at the lake: Trešnja is visited by swimmers, day-trippers, people having barbecues, cyclists, and other nature lovers. This makes it a draw for visitors who want to spend time by the water or in nature. If you would rather take in the views, a path through the area leads after about two kilometres to a panorama overlooking Avala. This viewpoint complements the lake with a different perspective on the surrounding area.
Traces of Local History
An ethnographic description published in 1903 places Mala Ivanča on a ridge between the Ralja River and the Raljić stream. It also reports that the settlement was first located in Pusta Ivanča and was later moved to its present site. The landscape and settlement history are thus distinct but connected aspects of the place: one describes its location, the other the change of site.
One tangible testament to its cultural history is the old house of the Žmurić family, with its courtyard, in Mala Ivanča. It is a protected immovable cultural asset. According to local tradition, there was also an old church near Orašje. This story is a local tradition and should not be equated with a historically confirmed building.
Sports Tradition and Regional Food Culture
A look at local events brings us to the “Miodrag Bazić–Baza” memorial small-sided football tournament. The twelfth edition began in 2024 in Mala Ivanča. It was organised by the Mala Ivanča Local Community, the “Mladost” Mala Ivanča football club, and the Municipality of Sopot.
In the wider area around Mala Ivanča, Sopot is also a destination in its own right for regional food culture. It traditionally hosts the “Milena Tatar” healthy food fair, which brings together organic food producers from Sopot and the surrounding area. Visitors can learn about organic production methods and sample dishes prepared by exhibitors. A visit to the fair is therefore distinct from the nature and history experiences you can enjoy directly in Mala Ivanča.
Planning Your Journey and Holiday Apartment
For getting around by bus, routes 441 and 41 connect Sopot, Mala Ivanča, and Mali Požarevac. Route 470A runs from Belgrade via Parcani and Avalski put to Mala Ivanča. Check the latest timetable and stops before travelling, as schedules and stop locations may change. The Avalski put or the motorway, exiting near Vrčin, are suggested routes for reaching Lake Trešnja. Road conditions and signage may also change, so it is advisable to check the latest route before your visit.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Mala Ivanča, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay. Would you like to centre your trip on the lake and the Avala landscape, are you particularly interested in the area's cultural history, or would you also like to include events in the wider area, such as the fair in Sopot?
