Culture and History

At the entrance to the holiday resort of Soveja lies Mănăstirea Soveja Monastery, which Matei Basarab had built between 1640 and 1645.

In 1846, the revolutionary Alecu Russo was exiled to this monastery; during this time, he discovered and collected the well-known folk ballad “Miorița”.

A museum was established in a building behind the Mausoleum of the Heroes of Soveja. Photographic and documentary material and weapons used by Romanian soldiers during the battles of the First World War were exhibited there.

Several historical layers therefore meet in Soveja at named locations: the monastery refers to the construction period under Matei Basarab, the history of Alecu Russo connects the place with the year 1846, and the exhibition behind the mausoleum commemorates the battles of the First World War. The museum exhibits both photographic and documentary material and weapons.

The connection to the folk ballad “Miorița” is part of the history of the monastery, just as Alecu Russo’s exile is. Both details relate to his stay in 1846 and supplement the monastery’s older building history with a literary chapter.
