Lepșa: Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture

From Lepșa, hiking trail no. 2 initially leads at an elevation of 610 metres via Valea Tișiței and Pârâul Cristianu Mic. It then reaches Golul Roibului at 1,460 metres and continues to Șaua Geamăna at 1,496 metres. The trail is marked with a red triangle; the route, approximately 13 kilometres long, takes 8–9 hours.

Hiking

The traditional, gorge-like section of the Cheile Tișiței protected area runs from “Gura Tișiței” to “Tunelul Mare”. “Gura Tișiței” is where the Tișița and the Putna River converge. The section is approximately 7 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 200 metres. The round trip is estimated to take 5–6 hours.

Golul Lepșei is an alpine meadow landscape. It can be reached via the DN 2D and then along a gravel and forest road. From Golul Lepșei, a footpath approximately 10 kilometres long leads to the point “La Trei Hotare”. This route is estimated to take approximately 3 hours. It lies within the administrative territory of the Comuna Tulnici municipality in Vrancea County. The protected area corresponds to IUCN Category IV and is a geological and landscape nature reserve. In 1973, Cascada Putnei (Săritoarea Putnei) was declared a natural monument. Cascada Putnei is approximately 80 metres long; its water collects in a lake approximately 12 metres deep.

Culture

The Mănăstirea Lepșa Monastery is located on the banks of the Putna River in the Vrancea Mountains and in the vicinity of Lepșa. It was founded in 1789 as an endowment of the local răzeși, that is, free peasants.

The wooden church “Naşterea Maicii Domnului” stands within the monastery. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and is a historic monument. The monastery also contains the “Sfânta Treime” chapel. It is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and was built in 1993.
