Valeni – Churches, History and Culture

Văleni combines a small local history with distinctive buildings and a landscape of gently sloping hills. At its centre is the wooden church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, built in 1811 from wooden beams on a stone foundation. Its history thus visibly reaches back into the 19th century and, together with other sites of remembrance, shapes the appearance of the commune.

Culture and Churches

The church was renovated inside and out in 1885. It has a wooden bell tower with two bells, cast in 1882. An old cemetery contains a stone cross from 1812, regarded in Văleni as the oldest stone cross. In addition to this historic ensemble, there is a newer parish church made of bricks. An obelisk in front of the town hall also commemorates the heroes who fell in the Second World War.

The historical evidence is distributed across several public points of reference: the church and cemetery form a historic ensemble, the obelisk creates another visible site of remembrance in front of the town hall, and the newer parish church complements the town’s religious buildings. Together, they show the different ways in which architectural history and remembrance meet within the commune.

Landscape

The commune is situated on two gently sloping hills. Acacia trees and fruit trees cover these elevations and give the surroundings their characteristic rural setting. In Văleni, architectural features, an agricultural landscape and the visible traces of local history thus meet directly.

History of the Place

The earliest documentary mention associated with Văleni dates from 1427 and concerns the now-vanished village of Fauri within the commune’s territory. The place name also reflects a historical change: the place was formerly called Valea Rea, and has borne the name Văleni since 1965. Both the old connection with Fauri and the later renaming are therefore part of the commune’s history.

Roads and Surroundings

Văleni is located on the national road DN 24 between Vaslui and Iași. The DN 24 crosses the commune’s territory in a north-south direction; the entire section within the commune is paved. In Văleni, the local road DC3A also begins at the DN 24 and runs westwards to the DJ246A. Around 2.5 kilometres of it are paved within the built-up area. The roads thus connect the central north-south axis with a local route running westwards.

Customs and Events

The local cultural life includes the custom of “Jienii”. The Văleni Commune Cultural Centre also organised a competition. The 26th edition of the competition festival “Eminescu prin mileniul III” likewise took place in Văleni. The festival connects children with literature, art and the values of cultural identity and is regarded as a cultural and educational tradition of the local community. The custom, competition and festival thus represent different forms of local cultural life.
