Mângureni: Museums, Wooden Churches and Forest Experiences

The wooden church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” in Mângureni is dated to 1785. Another wooden church from Mângureni was transferred to and preserved at the Muzeul Satului Vâlcean in Bujoreni. Together with the museums, churches and forest areas, this creates an excursion programme that includes both historic buildings and practical activities in nature.

Culture

The Muzeul Satului Vâlcean is an open-air village museum that reconstructs a traditional rural settlement across 8 hectares. The transferred wooden church from Mângureni is one of the tangible examples of rural architecture there. Its current location on the museum grounds and the preserved “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” church from Mângureni represent two different ways of preserving historic wooden buildings.

The Memorialul Nicolae Bălcescu is a museum complex with two exhibitions in 11 rooms. One exhibition is dedicated to the family, while the other is dedicated to Nicolae Bălcescu. Visitors can also take part in cultural education workshops. The Memorialul Nicolae Bălcescu is located in Valea Bălcească – Comuna Nicolae Bălcescu, Județul Vâlcea, and is open daily: from May to September from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and from October to April from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The different opening hours make the season a specific factor in planning the day.

Biserica din Gâltofani is a small oak-wood church and is also known as “Biserica de pe moșia Bălceștilor”. It originally served as a chapel for a boyar estate. The building had only one apse and a nave. Next to this church stands another named wooden church from Mângureni, “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, whose date points to 1785. Both buildings preserve different historical associations and architectural features.

Nature and Activities

Aleea Terapeutică is a forest area where visitors can try walking barefoot on natural surfaces. It was the first educational project of Asociația Vatra cu idei and became its trademark. The path combines the direct experience of various natural surfaces with the development of an educational project. For this activity, suitable weather and trail conditions are among the usual preparation considerations.

Vatra Park includes an obstacle course with more than five elements designed to develop motor skills. In addition, the park promotes a connection with nature through activities that develop motor and sensory skills. An insect hotel in Vatra Park is intended to raise awareness that people must give something back to nature. The obstacle course, sensory activities and nature observation therefore place different emphases within the same area.

Forest bathing sessions are also among the nature-based activities. They involved connecting with the forest through all the senses and were initiated as part of the “PĂDUREA CARE VINDECĂ” project. For such sessions, the scheduled times are a practical part of the preparation; current dates should be checked before visiting.
