Păltinoasa: Culture, Forests and Trails

The village of Păltinoasa was founded at the beginning of the 18th century. Traditional carpet weaving is preserved in Păltinoasa. The “Ignătescu Toader” wood sculpture exhibition can be visited in the Păltinoasa commune. The combination of village history, craftsmanship and wood art can be seen at various specific locations within the commune.

Culture and History

In the centre of Păltinoasa is Casa Polonă, which was inaugurated on 28 June 1998. In recent years, children from Bucovăț and from all over Păltinoasa learned Polish at Casa Polonă. In the Păltinoasa commune, there is a room for a museum of folk traditions that was established as part of a European-funded project.

In the village of Capu Codrului in the Păltinoasa commune, there is a historic monument honouring Romanian national heroes. The Church of the Ascension of the Lord is located in the centre of Păltinoasa village and was consecrated in 1912. The Church of Saint Nicholas in Păltinoasa was built in 1857.

Landscape

The Păltinoasa commune lies on the left slope of the Moldova Valley, at the transition between the Obcinas of Bukovina to the west and the piedmont-like Ciungi Massif to the east. Surrounded by beech, spruce and maple forests, its territory extends across this landscape. The Moldova River runs through the Păltinoasa commune.

The settlement connects the valley area with the wooded slopes and the transition between the two landscape regions. The Moldova River is part of the commune, as are the beech, spruce and maple forests. The western and eastern setting remains evident from its location on the left slope of the Moldova Valley.

Routes

The Păltinoasa commune developed along old connecting routes between Moldavia, Transylvania and Maramureș. It lies on the DN 17 national road. The road and railway connection near Păltinoasa linked Cernăuți and Vatra Dornei.

The Păltinoasa commune offers a strategic starting point for tourist routes to the Bukovinian monasteries with exterior frescoes. The Cacica–Vârfu Dealului–Păltinoasa forest trail begins at the bridge over the Bucovăț stream in Păltinoasa. After a few hundred metres, the forest trail leaves the village’s last houses behind and climbs towards the forest.

The route is characterised by its starting point at the Bucovăț Bridge and the subsequent ascent. The last houses of Păltinoasa are alongside the trail only for the first few hundred metres; after that, the forest trail continues towards the forest. The connection to the Bukovinian monasteries with exterior frescoes is described as a tourist route leading out from the commune.

Art and Winter

Poiana Dacilor is an art site in Păltinoasa on the banks of the Bucovăț stream. At Poiana Dacilor, there are stone-carved depictions of the Dacian kings Burebista and Decebal. A wooden wolf’s head sculpture stands at the centre and is regarded as a Dacian battle standard. From the Păltinoasa commune, the “Șoimul” ski slope in the Gura Humorului–Ariniș area can be reached very quickly.
