History

After the Habsburg annexation of northwestern Moldavia in 1774, Cornu Luncii became a border settlement; the area was known as Bukovina. A customs office was established on the Cornu Luncii estate on 6 May 1809; the former border guard post building has been preserved to this day. The former Austrian customs building is a solid, single-storey rectangular brick structure measuring approximately 12 metres in length and 4.5 metres in width.

In November 1918, Cornu Luncii—more precisely, the village of Stănilești—was the first place entered by Romanian troops during the liberation of Bukovina. The “Poarta Veșniciei Unirii” commemorates the entry of Romanian troops into Bukovina. National Road DN 2E crosses the commune of Cornu Luncii from west to east and connects the Gura Humorului–Fălticeni area.

Museums and Memorial Sites

The Muzeul Unirii in the commune of Cornu Luncii opened on 6 November 2018 and was established in a former border guard post building. It houses photographs and documents relating to the Great Union of Romania. In the centre of the commune of Cornu Luncii, a museum dedicated to the Great Union was established in the former Austrian customs building.

The Panteonul Eroilor is located in the centre of the commune of Cornu Luncii and is dedicated to the commune’s 346 heroes from the two world wars, the Revolution and overseas missions. Ceremonies were also held at the commune’s Panteonul Eroilor as part of Heroes’ Day. The Biserica Veche is a historic wooden church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.

Until 1990, Cornu Luncii was known for the Topitoria de In și Cânepă flax and hemp processing plant, which was considered one of the most productive facilities of its kind in Romania.

Festivals and Traditions

The Casa Memorială Ion Grosaru in Păiseni houses the personal belongings, military uniform, awards and books of the poet-hero. An annual literary and artistic programme takes place at the monument to the poet-hero Ioan Grosaru in Păiseni; it is also home to the Festivalul de poezie “Ioan Grosaru”, and a poetry festival was held at the monument in his honour.

The Festivalul Produselor Tradiționale featured traditional home-cooked dishes such as sarmale, lamb stew, cheese flatbreads, zacuscă and traditional meat products. Local and already established artists performed at the same festival. The Festivalul Produselor Tradiționale reached its seventh edition.

Family Experiences

At the “Satul românesc de altădată” in Sasca Nouă, children could see sheep, ponies, roosters, peacocks and rabbits, as well as old agricultural equipment. The site was designed as a place where tourists could discover the way of life of their grandparents and great-grandparents, taste traditional products and see traditional crafts.
