Culture

The Biserica Albă in Baia was built from rough and hewn stone; its walls are 1.8 to 2 metres thick. It contains a votive painting depicting Ștefan cel Mare, Doamna Maria and the children Alexandru, Bogdan, Petru, Olena, Maria and Bogdan Vlad, as well as a depiction of the Battle of Baia. According to tradition, the Biserica Albă is attributed to Ștefan cel Mare. Tradition also holds that he had it built to commemorate his victory in 1467 over the Hungarian king Matei Corvin.

The church-historical monuments also include the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God. It was founded in 1532 by Petru Rareș and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. The ruins of the Catholic cathedral in Baia were built as early as 1410 on the orders of Prince Alexandru cel Bun for his wife Margareta. Thus, Baia is home to a church founded by Petru Rareș in 1532 and dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, a church with a traditional founding history, and the remains of a medieval cathedral.

Nature

The Baia-Cetățuie archaeological site also links history with a specific landscape. It is located 2 kilometres southeast of Baia on the right bank of the Moldova River, in the immediate vicinity of the Baia forestry lodge. Parts of the site are covered by a relatively open beech and hornbeam forest. The river, the forestry lodge and the open woodland are just as much part of the local scenery as the archaeological character of the site.

History

The History and Ethnography Museum in Baia is housed in the 19th-century town hall. The building was erected during the time of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The museum has a history department and an ethnography department. The history department displays chronologically arranged exhibits from the Neolithic, Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the modern era and the contemporary period.

The ethnography department focuses on aspects of housing, traditional dress, customs and traditional activities from the area around Baia. Together with the historical exhibits and the churches, it presents a broad picture encompassing religious buildings, political history, everyday culture and traditional activities.

Cycling

A specific cycling option is the Cornu Luncii – Baia – Bogata – Sasca Mare – Cornu Luncii circular route. The circuit is 25.9 kilometres long, has a moderate level of difficulty and runs along paved and gravel roads. The starting and finishing points are in Cornu Luncii, while Baia, Bogata and Sasca Mare are part of the route.

Events

The municipality's cultural and events calendar includes the Baia File de Istorie Festival. It is one of the cultural and artistic events held annually in the municipality of Baia. Hora de la Baia is a cultural event promoting authentic local customs as well as Moldavian folk dress and folk dancing. The two events have different focuses: the festival combines culture and art, while Hora de la Baia centres on customs, traditional dress and dance.
