Culture and History

In Arbore, the painted church of Arbore Monastery is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist in Arbore is distinguished by its exterior wall paintings. It was built in 1503 as the residence of the governor of Suceava, Luca Arbore.

The medieval boyar court of Arbore–La Saghieni dates from the 15th to the 17th century. Construction of the Biserica Sfânta Treime began on 10 May 1901. The Biserica Sfânta Treime was consecrated on 29 August 1912. Sixteen national saints are highlighted in the Biserica Sfânta Treime.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Arbore was built in 1902. Also in 1902, the Roman Catholic church in Arbore was built by the village’s German Catholic community.

Arbore therefore brings together buildings and places of remembrance from several centuries. With its construction date of 1503, the Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist refers to the time of Luca Arbore, while the boyar court covers the period from the 15th to the 17th century. The Biserica Sfânta Treime adds to this historical picture with construction beginning in 1901, consecration eleven years later, and the 16 national saints highlighted there.

The churches built in 1902 are also part of this diverse local landscape. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Roman Catholic church represent two independent religious buildings from the same year. In the case of the Roman Catholic church, the village’s German Catholic community is also named as its builder.
