Discover Kastenholz: Churches, Cycling Tours and Historical Traces
Culture and History
A medieval church stands on Dealul Bisericii in Cașolț; it was first mentioned in a document in 1302. Its development comprises two phases: Romanesque and Gothic. The present Lutheran church of Cașolț was built in 1809.
The archaeological site on Dealul Bisericii in Cașolț is a religious, ritual and funerary, as well as defensive, cultural heritage site. The tumular necropolis of Cașolț extends over approximately 840 metres and comprises 299 tumuli dating from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Thus, architectural history and archaeology meet on the church hill: the medieval church, its Romanesque and Gothic development, and the necropolis belong to different historical levels of the same place.
Cycling Routes and Railway Traces
The “Mocănița – Valea Hârtibaciului” cycling tour follows the Hârtibaciu Valley parallel to the former narrow-gauge railway and into the centre of Cașolț. This narrow-gauge railway operated there until 2001.
The section of the narrow-gauge railway in Cașolț extends from km 90+825 to km 95+584. It dates from the period between 1898 and 1910. The evangelical church of Cașolț is listed as a tourist, historical and cultural attraction on the official “Mocănița – Valea Hârtibaciului” cycling tour. The route thus connects the Hârtibaciu Valley, the former railway line and the village centre with an explicitly listed historical destination. The railway trace also points to an older history of transport and the region, with the section in Cașolț dating to the period between 1898 and 1910.
Landscape and Nature
The “Mocănița – Valea Hârtibaciului” cycling tour passes through Cașolț and leads through oak forests, pastureland and historic villages in the landscape typical of the Hârtibaciu Plateau. As a result, this route focuses not only on the railway traces, but also on the succession of wooded areas, open pastures and historically shaped villages.
The “Brukenthal – Țara Oltului” cycling tour passes through Cașolț and through the two European Special Protection Areas, ASPA Podișul Hârtibaciului and ASPA Piemontul Făgăraș. Rare bird species such as the European nightjar, middle spotted woodpecker, woodlark and red-backed shrike can be observed there. The two protected areas and the four bird species mentioned give this route its own connection to nature alongside the cultural landscape of the Hârtibaciu Plateau.
Trovanți
The Trovanți of Cașolț are located at a gorge on the sandy banks behind the church hill. At the Trovanți site, layers of sand alternate with layers of finer gravel in the sandy hills. Their geological peculiarity is evident in the sequence of the different sediment layers: sand and finer gravel lie alternately on top of one another in the sandy hills.
Museum in the Hârtibaciu Region
The Museum of the History of the Hârtibaciu Valley in Agnita presents a permanent exhibition on the history and ethnography of the Hârtibaciu region. The museum documents the Neolithic cultures of Criș, Turdaș and Petrești through ceramic finds from Cașolț and other places in the Hârtibaciu region. The documented period thus extends from the Neolithic cultures, through the finds from Cașolț, to the history and ethnography of the entire Hârtibaciu region.
