Discover Oglinzi: Church, Archaeology and Spa Resort
Church and architectural history
The Biserica Sf. Nicolae Oglinzi combines several clearly dated construction phases. The first church in Oglinzi was built in 1653 on the orders of Prince Vasile Lupu. The present brick building in the shape of a cross was constructed much later: work began in 1918 and was completed in 1937. Its furnishings include an iconostasis carved entirely from linden wood. Patapie Cipenovici and Nicolae Milan made it between 1935 and 1937; both came from Bukovina. The building, furnishings and long prehistory therefore form independent historical characteristics of the place. This creates several historical layers for visitors to observe on site: the foundation initiated by the prince, the later brick building and the artisan-crafted furnishings all belong to the same church. Extensive consolidation work is under way at the Biserica Sf. Nicolae Oglinzi.
Archaeological traces
The area around Oglinzi also preserves evidence of much older settlement and economic history. The Oglinzi-Băi archaeological site is a prehistoric salt-mining site dating from the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods. Another site associated with the area is the Oglinzi-Lăzăreni archaeological site. It lies on the right bank of the Brustura stream, precisely where the Babete stream flows into it. In the fortified settlement of “Cetăţuia”, settlement during the Cucuteni culture was more extensive than during the Starčevo-Criş culture and the Linear Pottery culture. Salt extraction, the location by the waterways and the fortified settlement thus each represent a distinct chapter of the region’s past. The archaeological information links a prehistoric economic site with a settlement whose changing intensity of occupation has been documented across several cultural stages.
Landscape and paths
Oglinzi extends to the edge of the state forests. To the east lie the Crucii and Alivanca hills. In the Sărata Valley area, Cabana Băile Oglinzi is situated on the slope of Dealul Pleşu. These named landscape areas give the surroundings a clearly recognizable geographical structure: the forest edge, eastern hills, valley area and hillside location appear as distinct elements alongside one another. The place names anchor the landscape in specific terrain features, making the spatial relationships between forest, hills, valley and slope comprehensible. Tourist trails run through the Oglinzi spa resort area.
Spa resort and treatment history
The Oglinzi Resort is located 3 km from Târgu Neamț at an elevation of 480 m. Until 1939, it attracted visitors from throughout the country. Its treatment history includes warm baths, paraffin packs and galvanic baths. Dynamic currents and ultrasound were also part of the treatment regimen. Massages and therapeutic exercise were likewise listed as treatments. The list therefore ranges from baths and packs through electrical and physical procedures to manual and movement-related applications. The historical development of the resort thus encompasses both its documented nationwide visitor appeal up to 1939 and a broad spectrum of treatments that documents different forms of the treatment practices of the time. Oglinzi spa resort is therefore associated both with a visitor tradition documented for a specific period and with a diverse historical treatment foundation.
