Culture and History

On Ulița Casălor in Breb, three restored old wooden houses can be seen.

Their restored fabric makes the traditional construction method visible not only as a historical memory, but also in tangible buildings.

The rural cultural heritage project in Breb comprises twelve traditional homesteads featuring architecture typical of the historic Maramureș region, along with numerous preserved original elements and surfaces.

As a result, the traditional architecture remains comprehensible in several homesteads through their preserved components and surfaces.

These traditional homesteads have foundations made of hewn stone, wooden structures, clay- or earth-based plasters and shingle roofs.

The materials and building components mentioned show the homesteads in their complete structural connection: from the stone foundation through the wooden structure and plasters to the roof covering.

The Greek Catholic wooden church of “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” in Breb is a historic monument.

The church was built in 1622; its tower dates from 1531.

Thus, two different dates stand side by side in the church building, shaping its traditional architectural history.

It has an extensive collection of icons dating from the 17th to the 19th century.

The collection broadens the historical perspective on the church with works of art from several centuries.

On important religious holidays, Christian rituals of the Greek Catholic and/or Orthodox traditions, as well as old local customs and traditions, can be observed in Breb.

The shore area of Tăul Morărenilor is a bog covered by a dense, continuous layer of sphagnum moss.

The continuous moss layer determines the distinctive character of this bog area along the shore.
