Balta Albă: Spa Town, Lake and Protected Area

Spa Town and Literature

Balta Albă was founded as a spa town in 1838 and has been known as a spa town since the mid-19th century. Treatment with sapropelic mud at Lake Balta Albă dates back at least to 1840. This early spa history therefore includes a treatment tradition directly connected with the lake. Early mud treatment is thus part of the spa town’s history and closely linked to the lake. However, Balta Albă’s tourist offerings do not include treatment facilities.

Balta Albă has also left its mark on Romanian literature. Vasile Alecsandri first visited the place in 1846 and returned in 1847. Alexandru Odobescu later devoted impressive passages to Balta Albă in his 1874 work “Pseudokineghetikos”, also known as “Fals tratat de vânătoare”.

Lake and Protected Areas

Lake Balta Albă lies in the Râmnic Plain, immediately south of the road between Râmnicu Sărat and Brăila. It is brackish, shallow, dimictic and eutrophic. The lake also contains pelogenic mud that is rich in organic components and has therapeutic properties. The water body’s varied characteristics are as much part of its character as its connection with the history of the spa town.

The Balta Albă Nature Reserve is a geological and zoological protected area. It covers 1,167 hectares and lies on the eastern edge of Buzău County and the northwestern edge of Brăila County. In the management plan and regulatory framework of the Romanian Ministry of the Environment from 2025, Balta Albă is listed as protected area 2,271.

Birdlife

During the winter migration, the ROSPA0004 Balta Albă-Amara-Jirlău bird protection area includes an important feeding and resting area for red-breasted geese (Branta ruficollis). The wetland landscape is also important for the breeding populations of great bitterns (Botaurus stellaris), purple herons (Ardea purpurea) and ferruginous ducks (Aythya nyroca). Seasonal bird migration and the breeding populations mentioned represent two distinct aspects of the protected wetland landscape. The breeding seasons and winter migration mark different periods within the year.

Church and Archaeological Site

The parish church of Balta Albă has a trefoil-shaped floor plan with two side apses and an octagonal tower. Its iconostasis was made in the workshops of Plumbuita Monastery and installed on 18 August 1990. Together, the architecture and furnishings form a distinctive testimony to the local sacred culture.

West of the village, on the elevated terrace of the lake, lies the archaeological site of Balta Albă, 3.1 km from the village. It includes a settlement and a necropolis dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The area’s history thus extends from ancient settlement to the modern history of the spa town and its literature.

Shore

The Balta Albă tourist rest area is located on the DN 22 between Râmnicu Sărat and Brăila, directly on the shore of the lake.
