Snagov – Monastery Island on the Lake and Forest Landscape

Snagov Monastery stands on an island in Lake Snagov near the northern shore, between the villages of Siliştea Snagovului and Snagov.

History

The archaeological site of Snagov Monastery comprises a medieval monastic settlement, whose origins are dated to the 14th century, as well as the monastic necropolis. The site also includes earlier settlement traces from the Bronze Age and the second Iron Age.

A printing press was established at Snagov Monastery in 1643 during the time of Matei Basarab. The first documented mention of the name Snagov dates from 1408 and appears in a document issued by Mircea cel Bătrân.

Culture

The Snagov Museum Collections are officially recognized as the public collection "ISTORIE-LOCALA – Zona Snagov/Codrii Vlasiei" at Șos. Snagov No. 78.

The Collections present the cultural and natural heritage of the Snagov, Căldăruşani and Ţigăneşti region. Local archaeology and numismatics are among the exhibition topics. Ethnography and traditions form another thematic area.

Monasteries and churches are also covered. Ecotourism and water sports are likewise part of the thematic range. The Lacul Snagov nature reserve is also represented.

Seasonal visiting hours for the Snagov Museum Collections are scheduled from April to September. Visits take place on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 13:00. Group visits are available on request.

The seasonal opening hours make a museum visit a weekend activity; groups must make an inquiry. The collection combines local history with regional natural and leisure-related aspects.

Nature

Lake Snagov has an elongated, highly winding shape with numerous bays.

The Pădurea Snagov protected area serves to protect and preserve forest stands of particular dendrological value. Visits to this protected area are possible for educational purposes.

In the protected area, the preservation of forest stands of dendrological value is combined with educational visits. The Snagov forest thus complements the lake with a separate natural area for the aforementioned trails and biodiversity topics.

Activities

PI01 is named „Margine de lac împădurită (Habitate: 91MO und 3150)“ and is a 2 km circular trail. The stated duration for the route is 45–90 minutes. The difficulty level is 2 out of 10.

BI03 is a tour around Lake Snagov. It includes various types of paths and settlements. Nature and habitats are also components of this tour.
