Mesteacăn: Church, Burial Mound and Pilgrimage to Vorona

Mesteacăn combines a church complex with a burial mound in the Sarafineşti Forest and a traditional connection to the pilgrimage to Vorona. The Parohia Mesteacăn was founded on 12 July 1998, when the foundation stone for the future church was laid.

Church and Chapel

The interior of the church of the Parohia Mesteacăn was painted between 2005 and 2009 using the “a seco” technique. The church was consecrated on 23 August 2009. On the same day, the social centre and the chapel “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” in the grounds of the Parohia Mesteacăn were also consecrated.

The chapel “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” had already been built when the village was founded. Its name refers to the two saints Constantine and Elena, while the patronal feast of the Parohia Mesteacăn is “Intrarea Domnului în Ierusalim”. This patronal feast is considered unique in the Botoșani Deanery. The church is located on the road towards Vorona.

The development of the church complex thus comprises several clearly dated phases: the founding of the parish and the laying of the foundation stone in 1998 were followed by the painting of the church interior over a period of four years. In 2009, the social centre and the chapel within the complex were consecrated alongside the church. The chapel itself dates back to the time when the village was founded.

Geographical Setting

Outside the settlement area, the “Movila Schit Orăşeni de la Mesteacăn” is located in the Sarafineşti Forest. This named site is a burial mound. Its location is precisely described: it lies on the left side of the Fălticeni–Botoşani national road and 900 metres south-southwest of the forestry canton.

The description of the burial mound thus connects the Sarafineşti Forest with a clearly named road and a fixed reference point. Both the Fălticeni–Botoşani transport route and the forestry canton form part of the geographical setting of the “Movila Schit Orăşeni de la Mesteacăn”. The distance of 900 metres is specified as a south-southwesterly position relative to the forestry canton.

Mesteacăn is connected to Botoşani by the Sarafineşti–Mesteacăn–Orăşeni Deal–Botoşani road. This connection is used by the residents of Mesteacăn and Sarafineşti. In addition, Mesteacăn is located two kilometres before the entrance to the Vorona municipality. Several clearly named reference points therefore stand alongside one another in the local landscape: the church complex, the Sarafineşti Forest, the national road, and the connection towards Botoşani and Vorona.

Pilgrimage to Vorona

A more than 20-kilometre walking pilgrimage to Vorona Monastery was announced for 7 September 2026. The route was intended to pass through a section of forest and include a stop at the entrance to Mesteacăn. The planned stop connects the announced route with the village without changing the intended character of the pilgrimage.

Mesteacăn was also one of the final stops on a walking pilgrimage to Vorona Monastery. The church, its chapel and its location on the road to Vorona thereby form part of an explicitly identified pilgrimage context.
