Șugag between the Transalpina, Lake Oașa and tradition

Culture and traditions

The folklore festival “Zi-i bade cu fluiera” is held in Șugag every year in the second half of May. On the second day of Easter, the custom “Statu’ la vase în Lunea Paştelui” takes place in the churchyard of Șugag commune in the Sebeş Valley.

Șugag is associated with woodcarving traditions: winged distaffs, spoons with chains, spindles, cheese moulds, shepherds’ crooks and flutes belong to this range of traditional crafts. The various objects refer to the activities of spinning, moulding and herding and connect the collection with everyday rural life. The “Nicolae Cernat” museum collection comprises handcrafted objects made by the late artisan.

A bronze bust of the renowned lawyer and writer Ionel Pop was unveiled and consecrated in the centre of Șugag commune. Sfântul Gheorghe Pelerinul was born in Șugag in 1846.

The monument to the Romanian fallen of the First World War was erected by local residents in 1935 to commemorate the Romanian heroes who fell in the First World War.

Landscape and protected areas

The Sebeş Valley is broad around Șugag. In the tourist surroundings of Șugag, “Pintenii din Coasta Jinei” consists of isolated, striking rocks made of crystalline schist at an altitude of 750 to 900 metres.

In the tourist surroundings of Șugag, Masa Jidovului lies on the right slope of the Sebeş Valley above Șugag; the isolated rock also consists of crystalline schist.

Roads and routes

Within the administrative area of Șugag, the DN67C, the Transalpina, forms the backbone of the road network and runs there for a length of 62 kilometres. In the tourist surroundings of Șugag, the Transalpina crosses the Oașa Dam.

The Transalpina, also known as “Drumul Regelui”, runs through the Parâng Mountains and connects Sebeș and Novaci. It offers alpine landscapes and winding roads.

Traditional activities
