Those wishing to visit a specific site connected with the history of the revolution in Blaj will encounter Câmpia Libertăţii, the site of the Great National Assembly of 3/15 May 1848. At this assembly, around 40,000 Romanians proclaimed the words: “Noi vrem să ne unim cu țara!” Visitors to Câmpia Libertăţii can also see a monumental complex with 24 bronze busts of figures from the 1848 Revolution. Câmpia Libertăţii thus combines the historic assembly site with a memorial ensemble whose 24 busts commemorate the 1848 Revolution. In the Catedrala Sfânta Treime, Simion Bărnuţiu’s pulpit was used for a speech before the Great National Assembly of 1848.

Culture

If you would like to focus on a specific object connected with the history of writing and printing at the Augustin Bunea History Museum, you can see an old wooden printing press there. The New Testament was printed with this press in Alba Iulia in 1648. The museum predominantly displays archaeological objects discovered near Blaj dating from the Neolithic period. Ceramics are particularly well represented among the objects on display. The History Museum also exhibits Dacian objects from the 5th to the 1st century BC. The period covered by these museum holdings therefore ranges from Neolithic finds and Dacian objects to a printed work from 1648.

The former “Sfanta Terime” monastery complex in Blaj was built between 1731 and 1747. Its construction period therefore falls within the 18th century. The former Central Archiepiscopal Library in Blaj housed a library with more than 70,000 volumes and almost 1,000 old manuscripts. Both details retain a historical connection: the monastery complex is recorded as a former complex, and the library housed the stated collections in its former function.
