Reriz combines hiking experiences along the Rio Paiva with a remarkable sacred and historical landscape. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Reriz will find starting points here for active days, cultural discoveries and excursions to places whose history is closely linked to the river and the surrounding hills.

Hiking trails between Reriz and the Rio Paiva

An important route through the landscape is the GR60 – Rota das Montanhas Mágicas. After crossing at the Ponte do Brasileiro in Pinheiro, it follows the Rio Paiva to Reriz. At Reriz, the route leaves the Paiva Valley towards São Martinho das Moitas. Along the way, it leads over unpaved paths and several paved sections. Those planning a longer hike can take these different path conditions into account when planning their day.

The PR5 – Trilho do Paiva is also a 12.7-kilometre short-distance hiking trail. Its starting point is at the Largo by Reriz parish church. Before Casal Bom, the trail offers a detour to a picnic area on the Rio Paiva. For families or travel groups who like to structure their days around a specific route, this connection between the town centre, hiking trail and riverbank is a clear and practical element of a trip, without implying any particular walking time.

Chapels and Traditional History

Reriz is also characterised by several chapels and religious places of remembrance. The Capela de Santo António is considered an example of Mannerist religious architecture and is located outside Reriz on Monte do Outeiro. The Capela do Bom Jesus dates from the 17th century. The Capela de S. Sebastião is probably dated to the second half of the 16th century. In the early years of the 19th century, it served as a parish church during the reconstruction of the Igreja de S. Martinho.

Above Reriz, the ancient Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Rodes stands on Monte das Cabeçadas. The site was a Marian sanctuary visited by numerous pilgrims. Its foundation is attributed to Leovigildo Pires de Almidra; it is probably dated to around 1140. Its location on Monte das Cabeçadas offers wide-ranging views that also include Reriz. In the centre of the village is the Capela de S. José. Cama da Moura refers to a rock at the foot of which there may be an anthropomorphic grave.

River Landscapes, Bridge Ruins and Festivals

Near Reriz, the Rio Paiva forms meanders across the river terraces it created itself. At the Ruínas da Ponte de Cabaços, the river provides favourable conditions for biodiversity and is home to various rare and protected animal and plant species. The ruins are the remains of a granite bridge over the Rio Paiva with a medieval profile. Today, due to deterioration that has progressed over the years, only part of the bridge can still be seen; flooding in the 1960s destroyed a large section.

The traditional festivals also give the village its own annual rhythm. São Sebastião is celebrated on 20 January, and Santo António on 13 June. The Nossa Senhora de Rodes festival takes place on the last Sunday in May, and São Martinho on the weekend after 11 November. According to tradition, the religious celebration of Santo António at the Capela de Santo António includes a procession. The Poço do Abade is a river pool that, according to tradition, belonged to the abbots of Reriz; trout and other fish were caught there for the priests.
