Outeiro: Nature, Trails and Rural Culture

Outeiro combines a distinctive waterscape with rural culture and a variety of discoveries. The landscape is shaped by the large expanse of water of the Albufeira de Paradela. It also includes the green Prados de Lima and a stand of native oak trees. The Moinho do Canto is a preserved small granary watermill that is no longer in operation. In the past, a levada diverted water from the Rio Meão to the hydroelectric power station. At the Albufeira de Paradela, part of the regulated zone for recreational and sport fishing covers 76.83 hectares. This area lies in the Freguesia of Outeiro and in the União das Freguesias de Paradela, Contim and Fiães in the municipality of Montalegre.

Castro, village centre and distinctive buildings

The Castro de Outeiro is designated as a tourist attraction in Outeiro. It is associated with a remarkable discovery: when the road from Outeiro to Parada do Rio was opened, prehistoric gold torques were found at the foot of the Castro near the Rio Cávado. Anyone interested in the connection between the landscape and older traces of human use will find a distinct cultural focus here.

The preserved rural village centre also tells the story of local architecture and everyday life. Several buildings retain their original design. There are also shared rural features such as a threshing floor, wells, a basin and a livestock trough. The parish church of Outeiro has a bell tower that stands in the churchyard opposite the façade of the church building. Unusual names in the surrounding area include Silha da Portela da Fairra and Fojo da Portela da Fairra. Silha da Portela da Fairra is an archaic structure consisting of a small, usually circular stone wall that protects beehives from domestic and wild animals. Fojo da Portela da Fairra is a wolf trap of the fojo de cabrita type, with roughly circular granite walls. Both terms refer to traditional ways of managing livestock and the landscape.
