Favaios – Moscatel, Bread and Historic Routes

Favaios combines the tradition of Moscatel wine with regional bread, historic buildings and a varied circular hiking trail. Moscatel and bread as defining traditions

Moscatel de Favaios has been produced in Favaios since the 18th century. The Adega Cooperativa de Favaios, founded in 1952, offers an important insight into this winemaking tradition. The winery and its cellars can be explored as part of guided visits, followed by a wine tasting. These also include tastings of Moscatel wine with specially selected cheeses.

The Favaios, Bread and Wine Museum interprets the history of Moscatel wine and Favaios bread. It also explains the traditions and production processes associated with them. The local bakeries are part of this culinary character too: they produce the local “four corners” wheat bread in wood-fired ovens and offer visitors a tasting. Quinta da Avessada was also the first winery in the region to plant the Moscatel Galego grape variety. In September, the Festival do Moscatel do Douro returns to Favaios and includes a traditional communal toast with Moscatel from Adega de Favaios.

Historic centre and distinctive buildings

Largo da Praça and Rua Direita form the historic centre of Favaios. At Largo da Praça, an architecturally notable ensemble of regional interest shapes the appearance of the village; large parts of it were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Casa Lopo Vaz Moutinho includes one part of the building that may date from the 17th century, as well as a later Baroque section.

Casa de Santo António is considered one of the most interesting examples of a manor house in the Douro region. Typologically, it lies between an elegant scholar’s residence and a residential and agricultural complex. The Senhor Jesus do Outeiro Chapel also shapes the appearance of the village centre. This landmark, built in the 19th century, belongs to the Neo-Baroque Revival style. The Igreja Matriz de Favaios, also known as Igreja de São Domingos, is a Neoclassical church with a single-nave layout, a nave and chancel, as well as an attached bell tower and sacristy.

Quinta de São Jorge includes a walled garden, a small Romanesque church and a Roman funerary stele. The history of theatre is also part of the town’s cultural profile: the António Augusto Assunção Theatre was founded in 1919 and has seating for 400 spectators. Since 2006, OFITEFA – Oficina Teatro de Favaios has promoted theatre.

Elevation, the past and hiking

Castro Vilarelho lies at a high point in Favaios and is considered the largest site of its kind in the municipality of Alijó. Sections of the original defensive system are still present. Castro Vilarelho was probably inhabited from the castro period through to the Middle Ages. For visitors interested in history, this site combines an appreciation of the landscape with a long settlement history that can only be interpreted cautiously in some respects.

Those wishing to explore Favaios on foot can include the PR14 ALJ “Trilho de Favaios - Alijó” circular hiking trail in their plans. The starting point and finish are in Favaios. The trail is 10.5 kilometres long and takes around 3 hours and 25 minutes. Take this approximate duration into account when planning your day. Birds of prey such as goshawks and common buzzards, as well as land animals such as foxes, wild boar and white-toothed shrews, are also observed in Favaios.
