Wine, the Minho and traces of history

Monção brings together culture, wine tradition and the landscape along the Minho for a varied travel experience. Fortress, churches and historic buildings

A prominent cultural landmark is the Fortaleza de Monção, also called the Muralhas de Monção. It has been classified as a National Monument since 16 June 1910. A walk along the fortress offers views of the Minho and the Galician bank. The poet João Verde, who was from Monção, lived in the Casa do Arco. The Igreja Matriz is a 13th-century Romanesque church; its chapels commemorate Deu-la-Deu Martins and Dom Vasco Marinho.

There are also traces of history to discover beyond the fortress area. The Igreja de Longos Vales, also called the Igreja de São João Baptista, belonged to a former monastery of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, founded by Dom Afonso Henriques in 1197. The churchyard contains anthropomorphic graves carved into the rock, discovered in 1998. The Mosteiro de Merufe is a Romanesque monastery. The former Convento das Irmãs Bentas provided accommodation for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. In the village of Ermida, the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres is a Mannerist chapel built at the end of the 16th century.

The Palácio da Brejoeira adds a large Neoclassical manor house to the historic setting. Its construction began at the start of the 19th century and was completed about thirty years later. Alvarinho wine and authentic Bagaceira brandy are produced at the Palácio da Brejoeira. The Cine Teatro João Verde reopened on 25 April 2013 after extensive renovation.

Paths and views along the Minho

For a trip combining activity and scenery, the Ecopista do Rio Minho is an ideal focus. It runs between Valença and Monção along a former railway line and has been extended to 17 kilometres. The route offers views of the Minho riverbed, the surrounding vineyards and Galicia. A visitor centre is located at the former Cortes station. Together with the centre in the former Casa da Vigia da Linha in Valença, it provides users with parking spaces, information panels, explanatory brochures and reminders of the former railway line.

The Castro de São Caetano is classified as a National Monument and is a significant fortified settlement site of the protohistoric culture in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. From there, views extend across the Minho Valley and the wine-growing landscape. A hike at the Castro ends with a climb to the summit and opens up views of Monção’s vineyards, valleys and mountains. The present-day Torre de Lapela was built in the 14th century and rises about 35 metres above the Minho riverbed.

Santo António Vale de Poldros in Monção is also included in the Rota das Aldeias do Alto Minho cycling and hiking route. For planning purposes, it is important to note that this route is not signposted locally and is used with the help of a GPS track.

Alvarinho, local cuisine and festivals

The cuisine complements the region’s cultural character. The dish Lombelo à S. Jorge from Monção combines Bicas, creamy rice with turnip greens and sausages, succulent meat and a reduction made from Alvarinho wine. Monção’s gastronomy also includes salmon, lamprey, shad, chicken, various smoked products and Cordeiro à Moda de Monção, also called Foda à Monção here.

The Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Cabeça in Cortes is closely associated with the Easter celebrations and leads pilgrims to its shrine in the village of Bouças in Monção. Religious celebrations are accompanied by petiscos, socialising under the trees and an evening verbena. Those who also want to discover the bathing tradition will find an avenue lined with cedars and lime trees in the Parque das Caldas de Monção, connecting the old bathhouse with small sitting areas. Monção’s thermal waters have been used since the 17th century.
