Mazarefes: Churches, family history and wetlands
Accommodation in Mazarefes
In Mazarefes, local church history and an extensive wetland area represent two distinct sides of the destination. The Capela de São Simão preserves the site of the original parish church of São Simão da Junqueira de Mazarefes; the Veiga de São Simão extends across approximately 700 ha of wetland on the left bank of the Lima estuary. Visitors interested in cultural history and landscapes will find specific themes here to help shape their holiday plans.
Churches and family history
The Capela de São Simão recalls the site of the original parish church. Another chapter in the area's history is told by the Igreja Paroquial de São Nicolau de Mazarefes: originally, it was a chapel belonging to the “small monastery” of the Benedictine Congregation of Compostela. Later, it served as the private family chapel of the noble Pereiras de Mazarefes family. The former family chapel was handed over to the parish and is now the parish church. The chapel and the present-day Igreja Paroquial thus represent different chapters in Mazarefes’ church history.
The south-facing side wall of the Igreja Paroquial still bears the coats of arms of the Pereiras Pessanhas and the ruins of the passageway. Remains of the passageway to the church choir can also be found in the fire-damaged ruins of the old manor house near the church. The passageway illustrates the architectural connection between the manor house and the church choir. For visitors interested in history, the notable features are therefore not limited to names and former uses, but also include visible traces at the church and manor house.
Another detail adds to the family history: a member of the Pereiras family had a granite tomb built for himself against a side wall of the family's chapel in Mazarefes. The chapel's history thus encompasses both its private use by the family and the personal connection of one of its members. Together with the coats of arms and the remains of the passageway, this offers a nuanced picture of the family and church connections associated with the Igreja Paroquial.
Wetland and natural landscape
The Veiga de São Simão provides a refuge and feeding ground for several species of wading and water birds. Covering approximately 700 ha, it is an extensive natural area on the left bank of the Lima estuary. The approximate area gives a sense of the wetland's scale, while its role for birds offers a tangible glimpse of the local natural environment.
The landscape offers a different focus from the church and family history: here, the wetland and the habitats of several bird species take centre stage. As you weigh up your travel interests, you can distinguish between historical traces and a broad natural perspective.
More highlights for your stay
The Mamoa de Mazarefes is listed as a megalithic monument in the municipal planning regulation published in 2026. It adds a different type of monument to the church and family heritage. If you are interested in different forms of cultural heritage, you can include the Mamoa as another cultural highlight when exploring Mazarefes.
Praia Fluvial de S. Simão is also among the natural, recreational and leisure areas in the territory of the União de Freguesia de Mazarefes e Vila Fria. It adds another named highlight to the range of themes you can explore during your stay. If you would like to include the river beach in your plans, check current access conditions before visiting.
When looking for a holiday rental in Mazarefes, it helps to decide first what you would most like to focus on: would you prefer to explore the church and family history, or are the wetland and natural landscape more central to your plans? The Mamoa and river beach offer additional themes for your trip.
