Fortim de Montedor is located on Praia de Paçô beach. It was built in the last decade of the 17th century on the orders of King D. Pedro II to strengthen the coastal defence system of Alto Minho at the time. The site thus combines a specific coastal setting with the history of regional defence.

Farol de Montedor was built in 1910, is 22 metres high and stands 102 metres above sea level. As Portugal's northernmost lighthouse, it began operating on 20 March 1910. Anyone interested in maritime navigation and historic buildings can include this lighthouse as a separate focus in their travel plans without losing sight of Carreco's beach and landscape character.

The Museu Agro Marítimo de Carreço, located at the headquarters of the parish council, offers further insights. The rock engravings of Montedor also form part of the area's cultural profile: They are classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” and are located on the side surface of a granite outcrop near the small Praia dos Fornelos beach. Praia dos Fornelos lies in a small cove at the foot of Farol de Montedor. Moinho do Marinheiro stands out for its wooden sails.

Hike to mills and rock engravings

The Trilho dos Moinhos de Vento de Montedor is a marked and signposted short route (PR) in the municipal network of hiking trails of Viana do Castelo. The trail explores the archaeological heritage of Monte de Montedor through groups of rock engravings. This provides an independent way to combine landscape, mills and archaeology. If you are travelling with children or in a mixed group, you can set the hike against the beach and museum destinations as a more active day of travel.
