Discover Montijo
Accommodation in Montijo
In Montijo, the history of the Tagus, impressive cultural buildings and landscapes come together, which you can experience from the water or on a walk along the river. The town’s history has always been linked to the Tagus: artisanal fishing and transporting goods to Lisbon were among the most important activities for many years. Today, you can explore this connection in various places – in a museum, at historic mills and outdoors along the riverbank.
Tagus landscapes from the water and riverbank
On sightseeing trips along the Tagus, you can see several sights in the estuary. From the water, you can take in Montijo’s distinctive landscapes in detail. Along the way, you can spot flamingos, stilts, cormorants and avocets. The Zona Ribeirinha offers a different perspective: a riverside walk takes you along the river, with Lisbon and flamingos in the background.
For your plans, these are two different ways to experience the river: the trips combine the journey with landscape and wildlife observation, while a walk in the Zona Ribeirinha focuses on the riverbank scenery and the panoramic views. You can decide whether you would rather discover Montijo from the water or on foot along the river.
Church, mills and the history of fishing
The Igreja do Divino Espírito Santo – Matriz de Montijo was built in the early 15th century and later remodelled several times. Its 18th-century tilework depicts scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, the work of the Holy Spirit and Eucharistic prefigurations. The church brings together architectural history and religious art from different centuries.
Another testament to regional history is the Moinho de Maré do Cais. The tides powered the mill, which dates from the 13th or 14th century. Its original mechanisms remained intact until its complete restoration. It is considered the only building in the Tagus estuary for which this state of preservation has been described. The mill therefore offers a glimpse both into the river’s special role and into a historic way of harnessing its tides.
The Museu do Pescador connects this history of the river with the life of the fishing community. Its 80 objects are linked to the community’s identity, culture and customs. Images and artefacts also convey an important part of Montijo’s history connected with the river. The museum visit therefore offers a different focus from a walk along the riverbank: it centres on the people and traditions associated with the Tagus.
Cultural venues and events throughout the year
At the Museu Municipal Casa Mora, you can visit the building, the garden and the city museum exhibition. The Cinema-Teatro Joaquim d’Almeida also has a story told in several stages: it was built in 1957, acquired by the municipality in 1999 and renovated in 2005. It then reopened to the public with a regular cultural programme.
The Casa da Música Jorge Peixinho comprises an auditorium and the Museu Jorge Peixinho. The auditorium has its own programme under the direction of Companhia Mascarenhas-Martins; individual programmes vary. The Moinho de Vento do Esteval opened to the public as a museum space in 2000. Together, these venues showcase different aspects of Montijo’s cultural life: museums, exhibitions and stage programmes.
If you are interested in local traditions, you can also make a note of the Festas de São Pedro. Held annually at the end of June, they include bullfights and running of the bulls. The event adds a recurring annual celebration to the museums and historic buildings.
