Alcochete between the Tagus, salt pans and culture

Alcochete combines the landscape of the Tagus estuary with salt pans, birdwatching, history and traditional festivals. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can plan their stay around whether nature experiences, culture, walks or excursions on the water should be the main focus.

Wetlands, flamingos and salt pans

The Concelho de Alcochete includes the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo. The protected wetland is considered Portugal’s most important wetland and one of the most significant in Europe. During migration periods, it provides shelter for more than 120,000 birds; a flamingo colony also lives there all year round. Along the Alcochete waterfront, herons and eagles can also be spotted while walking along the Tagus.

Another focal point is the Complexo de Salinas do Samouco. The area covers 360 hectares and serves as a feeding, refuge and nesting area for thousands of birds. At Sítio das Hortas, you can observe halophytic, meaning salt-tolerant, vegetation and waterfowl. Direct contact with donkeys is also possible there, together with information about their daily work and care.

The 4-kilometre Trilho do Flamingo runs through the Complexo de Salinas do Samouco and has a low difficulty level. In the complex’s shop, you can buy handcrafted salt. Marinha do Canto is the only salt pan there that continues to produce salt. This combines nature observation with a practical insight into local salt production.

The Museu Municipal de Alcochete consists of two permanent exhibition units: the Núcleo Sede and the Núcleo de Arte Sacra. At the Núcleo Sede, the collections are arranged historically and chronologically and cover important moments in the history of Alcochete. The Núcleo de Arte Sacra displays, among other things, a collection of paintings, the altarpiece of the main altar and the Misericórdia banner, which is considered one of the oldest in the country.

The built and living history also includes the Igreja de São Baptista, which features the Manueline style, and the traditional Bairro das Barrocas. This neighbourhood was mainly inhabited by people connected with salt production, shipping and fishing. Tauromaquia is classified in Alcochete as intangible cultural heritage of municipal interest. The Círio dos Marítimos preserves a tradition of venerating Our Lady of Atalaia that has existed for more than five centuries.

Walks, boat trips and special dates

The Passeio do Tejo runs along a 1,000-metre-long wall beside Rua do Norte, Largo da Misericórdia and Avenida D. Manuel I. For a different perspective of the estuary, tourist river cruises are offered on the Bote Leão between Ponte Vasco da Gama and the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo. These trips take place between May and October. Praia dos Moinhos is used for kitesurfing and for learning this sport.

If you are travelling with children under 12, you can consider an activity with donkeys at Sítio das Hortas designed specifically for this age group. The short course includes selecting and preparing the animal, as well as basic rules for a safe walk. Another event that shapes local life is the traditional Festas do Barrete Verde e das Salinas; many visitors attend, particularly on the second weekend in August. The celebrations of the Círio dos Marítimos begin on Holy Saturday and continue for another three days.
