Junceira’s history unfolds across several layers. A parish church, the hermitage in Poço Redondo and accounts of religious festivals offer different perspectives on faith and community life. At Carril, a bridge and waterworks add to the story; an abandoned gold mine points to another chapter in the area’s history. For those interested in cultural history, the appeal lies in placing these subjects in their historical context.

Church History and Local Tradition

A precise starting point is 9 February 1570, when Junceira was established as a vicariate of the Order of Christ. The Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the Parish of São Mateus was active from 1744 to 1867. Alongside it is the historic Festa em Honra do Espírito Santo, celebrated in Junceira in the 18th and 19th centuries. These two timeframes offer different perspectives on religious life: a church community with a clearly defined period of activity and a festival tradition rooted in two centuries.

Buildings also mark points in time. The Igreja Matriz de Junceira was rebuilt in 1820. In Poço Redondo, a locality within the União de Freguesias Serra/Junceira, there is a hermitage dedicated to the Paraclete. The parish priest organised the celebrations in honour of the Holy Spirit at this hermitage. The parish church and the hermitage each provide a distinct local point of reference for the religious story.

Waterworks, a Bridge and a Dam That Disappeared

Around Junceira, the Carril hydro-agricultural project includes a dam built on the Ribeira da Lousã. The project also extends into the União das Freguesias de Serra e Junceira. The history of water management thus adds a different perspective on the area to its religious themes.

The three-arched Ponte Romana de Carril lies on the Ribeira da Lousã in the Freguesia Junceira. It still provides a crossing to the opposite bank. Check local conditions before visiting. The crossing is a tangible point of reference that distinguishes the bridge from structures that no longer exist today.

Further afield, the Roman-medieval dam of Chocapalhas, CNS No. 15961, stood in the course of the Ribeira da Lousã, also known as the Carril. It disappeared after the Barragem do Carril was built and inaugurated in 2002. In contrast, the Ponte Romana de Carril still offers a possible crossing between the banks, while Chocapalhas has disappeared. Together, these sites by the water tell different stories about how structures relate to the present day.

More Historical Traces and Travel Planning

The gold mine near Poço Redondo was worked in the 20th century and is now abandoned. It adds an industrial trace to the picture, one that differs clearly in date from the religious traditions.

One precisely dated example of an event in Junceira is the Festa da Juventude da Junceira, held from 21 to 24 July 2023. On 21, 22 and 23 July, the programme included the free exhibition of LEGO® constructions, Mini BRInCKa. The event was organised by the Associação Cultural, Recreativa e Desportiva da Freguesia de Junceira. Its specific dates and exhibition programme make it a distinct chapter alongside the older festival tradition.

When choosing a holiday rental in Junceira, its cultural focus can be a useful starting point. Consider whether you would like to shape your trip particularly around religious traditions, historic buildings or the history of the waterways. This can help you decide whether Junceira suits the subjects you would like to explore on holiday.
