Alcobertas: Dolmen, Springs and Historic Trails
Alcobertas combines megalithic history, distinctive landscapes and trails for days of discovery of varying lengths. The Dólmen de Alcobertas, the Gruta de Alcobertas, the Olho de Água spring and several historical landmarks give the village its distinctive character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Alcobertas, you can therefore plan your trip around whether culture, nature experiences or hiking should be the main focus.
Between the Dolmen and Local History
One of the most impressive monuments is the Dólmen de Alcobertas. This megalithic tomb dates from the Neolithic period and is one of the ten largest examples on the Iberian Peninsula. Alcobertas therefore offers a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in early history and prehistoric structures during their trip.
Unusual historical traces can also be found in the village itself. The Silos de Alcobertas were used to store grain, as well as containers holding other products such as olive oil, salted meat and wine. At the same time, they form the largest known group outside an urban, domestic or religious context on the Iberian Peninsula. The Igreja Paroquial de Alcobertas is classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público”.
Centuries ago, the Forno Medieval de Alcobertas was a communal kiln for firing ceramics. It has been restored and is now housed in a covered structure that serves as an interpretive space within the Núcleo Arqueológico de Alcobertas. This allows the local history to be explored not only through individual structures, but also through earlier forms of communal use.
Spring, Cave and Landscape
The Olho de Água de Alcobertas is located in Alcobertas within the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. The spring is one of the five most important year-round springs in the Maciço Calcário Estremenho. Another notable site is the Geossítio do Vale de Barco, a former calcite quarry within this natural park.
The Gruta de Alcobertas consists of four horizontally arranged chambers. It extends for approximately 210 metres and reaches a height of 9 metres in some places. For trip planning, it is important to note that visits are currently possible only in groups and by prior arrangement with the Cooperativa Terra Chã. In addition, the Cooperativa offers an interpretive tour of the Gruta on the second Sunday of each month; prior registration is also required for this.
For a quieter break between historical and scenic impressions, the Jardim Porto do Rio is a suitable place to relax and enjoy leisure activities. It has planted areas, a playground and equipment for physical exercise. The Ribeira de Alcobertas runs through the garden and forms small cascades along the path. Those travelling with children can include this location as a separate part of their day plan without combining a visit to the larger attractions with a long circular trail.
Circular Trails for Different Day Plans
The Potes Mouros circular trail is 4.65 kilometres long and starts and ends at Parque do Porto do Rio in Alcobertas. The Castro S. Martinho circular trail covers 16.3 kilometres and starts and ends at the Cooperativa Terra Chã. The significantly different trail lengths help you plan your hiking day according to the desired scope, without attributing additional characteristics such as walking time or difficulty to either trail.
The Caminho dos Candeeiros also leads to a special attraction in Alcobertas: the Anta-capela de Alcobertas. Together with the dolmen, spring, cave and historic sites, this creates a destination where individual discoveries can be combined into different excursions. When looking for accommodation in Alcobertas, it is therefore worth first deciding on your priorities: a day plan centred on Parque do Porto do Rio, cultural and historical sites, or an itinerary built around the pre-booked cave visit.
