At the confluence of the Tagus and Zêzere, Constância combines riverside scenery with a rich cultural history. Whitewashed houses line a hillside; gardens, churches and museums tell stories of Camões and the rivers’ former importance. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the river and bathing season, literature and architectural history, or scientific discoveries?

River history on the Tagus and Zêzere

In the 14th century, Constância was an important river port and a busy trading hub. The Museu dos Rios e das Artes Marítimas illustrates the economic importance of the rivers and their close connection with the local population. Its permanent exhibition documents river activities through miniature boats, fishing nets, everyday objects, tools and photographs; it also includes a small caulker’s workshop. Miniature boats also recall Constância’s former tradition of Varino river transport.

The Grande Rota do Zêzere follows the river from its source in the Serra da Estrela to its mouth in the Tagus at Constância. This makes it possible to view the river here not only as part of the townscape, but also in the context of its entire course.

Camões, gardens and annual festivals

Constância is associated with Luís Vaz de Camões, the 16th-century Portuguese poet and author of “The Lusiads,” who lived here for a time. The Jardim-Horto de Camões is home to the 52 plant species mentioned in his work. The grounds also include the Jardim de Macau, the Ptolemaic Planetarium in the open-air auditorium, and a tile mural depicting Camões’ travels.

The Casa-Memória de Camões also reflects this connection: it was built over the consolidated ruins of a 16th-century house. The former house was classified in 1983 as an immovable asset of public interest. The annual Pomonas Camonianas on 10 June honours Camões with festivities depicting the Middle Ages. Around Easter, the Festas de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem include a procession with decorated boats. If you plan to travel specifically for one of these occasions, you can check the exact dates for that year’s event.

Churches and architectural history

The Igreja Matriz de Constância, also known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, was developed over several centuries from an earlier chapel; the main part of the building dates from the time of D. João V. Its altar of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem dates from the second half of the 18th century. On the ceiling is an allegory painted by José Malhoa in the late 19th century.

The Igreja da Misericórdia brings its architectural and decorative history vividly together. Work on the church extended through the second half of the 17th century; in 1978, it was classified as an immovable asset of public interest. Its interior is entirely covered with blue-and-yellow tiles in geometric patterns dating from the 17th century.

Riverside beach and bathing season

The Praia Fluvial de Constância is on the left bank of the Zêzere and has a 3,500-square-metre sandy area. Nearby are a picnic area, a playground, free parking, toilets and green spaces. The beach meets current requirements for bathing-water quality and lifeguard services; even so, it is worth checking conditions for the relevant bathing season before planning a day at the beach.

During the bathing season, the Praia com Animação programme offers workshops, treasure hunts, boat trips, games, dance, visual arts and a beach library. Individual activities may vary from year to year. Water-based activities and seasonal events thus provide a different focus from the year-round stories told by the churches and museums.

Discover science and nature

The Centro Ciência Viva de Constância – Parque de Astronomia offers astronomy activities and other scientific observations. The observatory has five movable domes with telescopes of different designs and apertures. The planetarium can simulate the observable sky for any time, date and latitude. Astronomy here therefore puts both the observatory’s instruments and the planetarium’s changing view of the sky in the spotlight.

The Borboletário Tropical, in the municipality of Constância, offers a different natural highlight: tropical butterflies live there all year round in a warm, humid environment. When weighing up river, heritage and science while planning your trip, these different themes can help guide your stay. To focus on the town itself, explore Constância.
