Longomel: History, Landscape and Culture
Longomel is a place whose history stretches back through different periods and whose landscape is shaped by the Ribeira de Longomel, former rice fields and extensive wooded areas. Anyone wishing to combine a trip with historical discoveries, cultural impressions and nature observation will find various themes here to incorporate into their plans. Families with different interests can tailor their stay according to their preferred priorities.
Historical Traces Around Longomel
An important turning point in the history of the town was 1 July 1518: on that day, Longomel received a Manueline town charter. The historic route «estrada dos almocreves» passed through Longomel and Torre das Vargens, pointing to the former importance of routes and connections in the region. Another, though only possible, historical attribution concerns the original settlement of Longomel. It may have been located in the area of today’s Freguesia Margem in the Concelho Gavião, near a Roman road. This connected Aritium Praetorium, today’s Abrantes, directly with Abelterium, today’s Alter do Chão, and formed part of one of three routes between Lisbon and Mérida.
The name “Lagosmil” is also probably associated with the numerous lakes or marshes that once existed along the Ribeira.
Ribeira, Rice Cultivation and Montado
From the 19th century onwards, the floodplain of the Ribeira de Longomel was used mainly for rice cultivation. The earliest mention of rice cultivation in Longomel dates from 1800. Anyone interested in regional agriculture and changes in cultivated landscapes can incorporate these details into their exploration of the area without reducing Longomel to a single theme.
The Herdade da Sanguinheira also contributes to the diversity of the landscape. It covers around 150 hectares and is mainly characterised by cork oak Montado and maritime pine trees. Various bird species, some river fish species and, occasionally, otters can be found at the mill sites. This gives you different options for planning your day: you can follow historical connections, take in the landscape or focus on the wildlife around the mill sites. Specific sightings will always depend on the particular stay.
Cultural Experiences and Local Traditions
Longomel also has a cultural side. During the 13th edition of the Festival Música Júnior, Longomel was one of the Freguesias where decentralised concerts were held. The Trio de Cordas dos Professores de Master Classe performed at the Igreja Matriz de Longomel. These examples illustrate two different forms of cultural life: a festival spread across several locations and a specific performance in the local church.
The first weekend of August is given for the “Festas Populares” in Longomel. If you would like to align your trip with local traditions and events, this date provides an interesting reference point. At the same time, the history of the town, the landscape along the Ribeira and the cultural information offer plenty of material for a more relaxed trip planned without a fixed event theme.
