Castelo De Vide: History and Easter Traditions
Accommodation in Castelo De Vide
Castelo De Vide combines a medieval castle complex with Jewish history, distinctive fountains and recurring Easter traditions. The town’s history is evident in its fortifications, as well as in individual buildings and traditions that unfold throughout the year. When planning your visit, it is worth first considering whether historic sites, a walking route or the Easter celebrations will shape your stay.
Walls, Jewish History and Architecture
The medieval wall of Castelo de Vide has an irregular polygonal layout and encloses the castle. A keep is attached to the main gate, and a barbican stands in front of the fortress. The layout and the various structural features offer a tangible introduction to the history of the fortifications.
The historic Judiaria de Castelo de Vide dates back to the 13th century, to the time of D. Dinis. One building that has now been turned into a museum is believed to have been the former medieval synagogue. In the other rooms of the former synagogue, an exhibition presents the history of Castelo de Vide’s Jewish community. The Capela do Salvador do Mundo also dates from the late 13th century.
Other historic landmarks are associated with different dates: the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was founded in 1585 at the expense of Gaspar de Mattos and his wife, Beatriz de Mattos. The Recollect monastery of the Franciscan Order was the first religious institution of this kind to operate in Castelo de Vide. As early as 1494, the Bishop of Guarda had granted residents permission to build the Ermida de Santo Amaro on a site that already lay outside the town walls.
The Fonte da Vila was built in the 15th century. Its canopy rests on marble columns and supports a pyramidal roof topped with a pine cone. The fountain can therefore be described not only by its age, but also by its distinctive roof shape.
Easter Traditions with a Rhythm of Their Own
In Castelo de Vide, Easter combines Catholic practices with elements of Jewish culture and is one of the most important local events. On Easter Saturday morning, shepherds bring their flocks to the town centre for the traditional Benção dos Cordeiros. The animals are blessed and then sold. After Mass, the Cortejo da Aleluia passes through the main streets, accompanied by a brass band and the church’s carillon. As the dates of the celebrations vary from year to year, check them when planning your trip.
Routes for Days of Culture and Nature
Those who want to explore the surrounding area on foot will find several specific route options. The PR1 – Percurso pela Serra de São Paulo starts in Castelo de Vide at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Its route includes an old paved section leading to the Alminha de S. Paulo. The PR5 – Percurso das Fontes na Vila starts near the cemetery and passes the town’s most monumental fountains. The route enters the historic centre through the Porta de São Pedro, crosses Rua Direita and ends at the Fonte da Vila.
There is also an option for archaeological exploration: the archaeological route can begin in Castelo de Vide at the Centro de Interpretação do Megalitismo. On the PR3 CVD-MRV, the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede is listed as a point of interest. Check local trail conditions before setting off, especially if you plan to make a route a fixed part of your day.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start with the reason for your trip: the Easter dates, which vary from year to year, are key for a stay around the celebrations, while the named starting and ending points help when planning days out on the routes. If you are mainly interested in discovering buildings and history, the walls, Judiaria, chapel and fountains offer different historical points of reference.
