Beirã – Railway History, Cycle Routes and Nature Experiences

Railway History and Regional Culture

At Marvão-Beirã railway station, the azulejo panels attract attention. They depict sights from Alto Alentejo and the rest of Portugal. The station formerly served the municipality and was a cross-border station between Portugal and Spain. The archaeological site of Herdade dos Pombais is another part of the cultural and historical selection. The 26-kilometre Percurso 12 Beirã road cycling route starts and ends at Polo A – S. Mamede in Beirã. It passes through montado of cork oaks and holm oaks, through some grazing areas, and passes Santo António das Areias and Barretos. The 44.7-kilometre Percurso 13 Beirã is a cross-border road cycling route. At an intermediate point, cyclists can choose whether to cross the border or return to this point along the same route.

Railbike Marvão is also of interest when planning a day trip. The service is open all year round, but requires advance booking and remains subject to availability. Railbike Marvão operates in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. One excursion turns around on a bridge dating from 1930, located 30 metres above the ground, and then returns to the station. The Castelo de Vide Railbike ride is designed as a round trip between two historic, picturesque stations and includes a picnic.

Hiking and Choosing Accommodation in Beirã

Those who prefer travelling on foot can plan the Beirã–Barretos–Ranginha circular hiking trail. It begins in Beirã and leads through Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Along the way, there are several round stables and wells typical of the region beside the road; the route also passes through an area with distinctive rock formations. This makes it possible to combine active days with a more leisurely appreciation of the landscape.
