Machico: History, Beaches and Nature in Madeira

Machico combines Madeira’s early history with beaches, viewpoints and a diverse landscape. If you are planning a trip where culture, the sea and nature are equally important, the town offers many different ways to experience them. Historical Traces in Machico

The historic centre corresponds to the settlement area that emerged after the discovery of Madeira in 1419. An important date in the island’s religious history is 2 July 1419: the first Mass in Madeira was celebrated in Machico on that day. The Capela dos Milagres stands at this site. The religious building combines vernacular architecture with Baroque elements. A procession held at the chapel every year also commemorates the 1803 flood.

The Igreja Matriz de Machico also tells the story of the town’s development. It was commissioned by the family of the donatary captains in the late 15th century and has been classified as a property of public interest since 1940. The Capela de São Roque dates from the 18th century and features narrative blue-and-white tiles depicting scenes from the life of Saint Roch. The Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo was built in 1706 and is classified as a property of public interest because of its historical and architectural significance.

The Solar do Ribeirinho offers further insights and houses the Núcleo Museológico de Machico. It opened on 15 November 2007. The Mercado Quinhentista recreates the life of the settlers who lived in the former captaincy of Machico in the 16th century. The Semana Gastronómica de Machico is also part of the local tradition: this event showcases fish and seafood specialities and has already been held more than 30 times.

Beaches, Bay and Viewpoints

Praia da Banda d’Além makes it possible to swim directly from the town centre. The beach is located in Machico Bay and has yellow sand. Praia de São Roque, on the other hand, is a freely accessible pebble beach with facilities for a safe visit. These different types of beach give your stay a clear choice: yellow sand and swimming take centre stage at one, while at the other you can experience a pebble beach.

Nature Experiences and Trails

The municipality of Machico has an extensive network of hiking trails. Its landscapes range from laurel forests and levadas to geological diversity and rural areas, as well as coastal scenery. A notable viewpoint is the Miradouro do Pico do Facho. It is located at an altitude of around 330 metres between Machico and Caniçal. From there, you can see the Machico valley, the mountain massif, the airport, Caniçal and Porto Santo. The Grutas do Cavalum consist of four natural lava caves. Some of the cave animals found there are endemic exclusively to Madeira. Anyone interested in nature and the island’s special features will find a distinctly different experience here from the historic buildings in the town.
