Around the Baía de Câmara de Lobos, a small sea bay, colorful fishing boats and a long local history come together. The boats are called “xavelhas” in Madeiran; Câmara De Lobos is known for its centuries-old fishing tradition. There is also a rocky beach, coastal paths and buildings with very different historical associations. During your stay in Madeira, you can choose between experiences by the sea, walks and a focus on cultural history.

Bay, Beach and Coastal Path

The Baía de Câmara de Lobos is a picturesque little sea bay. It is associated with the colorful fishing boats known as “xavelhas.” Praia do Vigário offers a different view of the coast: it is approximately 400 meters long and consists of rounded beach stones of various sizes. As the main place to swim in Câmara De Lobos, it gives the beach a distinctive place among the local coastal experiences.

The Promenade de Câmara de Lobos offers another perspective: a 2.2-kilometer coastal path for pedestrians. It runs between the Ponta da Cruz area and the bay of Câmara de Lobos. Along the way, it passes through Caminho da Trincheira and ends beside the parking lot at the bay. The promenade thus connects a specific, measured route with two named end areas—a useful reference when planning a walk as part of your stay.

Two Routes, Different Scales

The promenade and Caminho Real 25 offer different ways to explore the area on foot. The promenade has a specified length and route along the coast. Caminho Real 25, by contrast, starts in São Vicente, passes through the municipalities of Jardim da Serra, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Câmara de Lobos, and ends at the Portas da Cidade in Funchal. Its named stops therefore extend beyond a single coastal stretch. When planning your outings, this distinction helps put things in perspective: on the one hand, a clearly measured promenade route; on the other, a path with several named sections and an endpoint in Funchal.

Churches, Fishing History and Craftsmanship

In the center of Câmara De Lobos stands Igreja de São Sebastião, a Baroque church with three naves and a high altar decorated with gilded wood carvings. The three naves are the lengthwise sections of the church interior; the carved altar adds a distinctive decorative feature. This building thus brings together architecture and detailed woodwork.

Near the Baía de Câmara de Lobos, Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is located within the municipality. It was classified as a monument of municipal interest in 1993. Another historical connection is the former Capela de São Sebastião: its construction was commissioned in 1426 by order of Infante D. Henrique. This date belongs to the history of the former chapel.

Forno da Cal also tells the story of an earlier craft. Roque Teixeira de Agrela had it built in 1874 at Trincheira; it is considered local cultural heritage by the Regional Government of Madeira. The kiln remained in operation only until the 1970s. Its year of construction and limited period of operation give this site a clear historical focus.

Jardim do Ilhéu is located on a rock facing the sea. A fishing quarter once stood on the Ilhéu. The municipality of Câmara De Lobos also includes Convento de São Bernardino, dating from the 15th century, on Madeira’s south coast.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

If you are traveling with varied interests, the coast and cultural history can be considered as separate focuses: the bay, beach and promenade offer a connection to the sea, while the church, chapel and Forno da Cal present various historical and architectural themes. When looking for a holiday apartment, it therefore makes sense to first consider which experiences you want to define your stay. The coastal paths and cultural sites mentioned here offer specific points of reference, without requiring you to focus on just one side of the town.
