Forte, Churches and Historical Traces

The Forte de Sacavém is located on the right bank of the Rio Trancão, near its mouth at the Rio Tejo. It was built in the 19th century after the end of the Portuguese Civil War from 1832 to 1834, in order to create a defensive line along the Rio Tejo. The Nossa Senhora da Saúde e Santo André sanctuary dates back to a time before 1599; its exact date of origin is not known. It served as a hospital for people with leprosy.

A special opportunity to discover public art is offered by the guided tours of the Galeria de Arte Pública. They take place on the last Saturday of every month at 10:00; the meeting point is the Casa da Cultura de Sacavém.
