Discover Vide: Rock Art, River Landscape and Culture

Vide combines prehistoric rock art, the Rio Alvoco and impressive examples of regional architectural heritage. Those looking for a mix of discoveries, landscapes and varied days during their holiday will find different points of interest here to help plan their trip. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Vide can suit a stay that brings culture and nature together.

Rock Art, a Church and a Striking Bridge

Vide is home to three prehistoric rock art sites considered to be of great archaeological interest. The most important rock engraving sites are located in Entre-Águas and Ferraduras. They feature geometric-symbolic depictions and schematic anthropomorphic figures, probably dating from the Bronze Age. A visit is therefore not aimed solely at specialists: the motifs also offer interested travellers a special way to engage with the landscape’s long history.

Another characteristic building is the Igreja Matriz in Vide. It is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção and probably dates from the 18th century. Its single-nave layout and main façade with blue-and-white patterned azulejos give the church a clearly recognisable appearance. The Ponte Medieval – Vide complements this cultural impression with a single, wide-span round arch and regularly shaped granite voussoirs. It is located in the centre of Vide over the Ribeira de Alvoco and connects its two banks.

River Landscape and Hiking Route

The PR13 Rota da Ribeira de Alvoco connects Vide with Alvoco da Serra and passes through a valley between the Serra do Açor and the Serra da Estrela. The route ends in Vide, is approximately 17.095 km long and takes around 6 hours and 30 minutes. It is considered difficult and is recommended year-round. When planning your day, you should allow for this longer hike as a fixed part of your stay.

Various water landscapes lie along the Ribeira de Alvoco. The Poço dos Caneiros is a natural pool with clear water from the Ribeira de Alvoco. Swimming is possible there in summer. The surroundings are green and characterised by ash and alder trees, creating a landscape impression that differs clearly from the rock art sites and the buildings in the town. Along the Rota da Ribeira de Alvoco there are also artificially created pools known as poços de broca. Their streams were diverted.

Museums and Special Places for a Relaxed Day Plan

Lagar do Ribeiro has been a museum space since 2019. Visitors can learn about the traditional process of producing olive oil there. The olive press and museum are located on the right bank of Vide beside Rua do Passadiço. This visit can therefore be included in your trip planning as a separate cultural focus, complementing the exploration of rock art and sacred architecture with a local tradition.

The Centro Interpretativo de Arte Rupestre de Vide is located in the building of Vide primary school. Visits are arranged by prior appointment. Those who would like to place the rock engravings in a broader context can take this appointment into account when planning their trip. The Capela do Senhor do Calvário also stands on a hill above Vide. It includes a recreational area with impressive cork oak trees.
